Skrocki pitches Spring City past Downingtow­n, 1-0

Jake Skrocki was the best of the two pitchers in the duel.

Skrocki threw a shutout Wednesday to lead Spring City’s American Legion baseball team past Downingtow­n, 1-0. The matchup of the Chester County League’s top ballclubs went into extra innings before SC, scoring in the bottom of the eighth, dealt Downingtow­n its first loss in league play.

The pitching was strong on both sides, Skrocki fanning eight in his completega­me stint while Downingtow­n starter Jake Reese had eight of his own.

Coy Walters drove in the game’s lone run with two away in the eighth, dealing Reese the loss.

Andrew Huang, JC Reed, Walters, Kasey Caras and Ryan Harvey each collected hits for the Sox.

PHOENIXVIL­LE 3, LIONVILLE

2» Both teams were strong on the hill, but the Phantoms rode a three-run third inning to victory over the Hillcats in Chester County League play on Wednesday.

Logan Perrone, who relieved starter Cole Eggleston in the fourth inning and threw four-hit ball over the next three, got the pitching win. Branden Fink led Phoenixvil­le at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one RBI while Kevin Cushing drove in the other two.

SPRING-FORD 12, KENNETT

SQUARE 2 » The Red Sox racked up 12 hits and seven walks on the way to a 12-2 Chester County League win over Kennett Square on Tuesday night.

Kasey Caras finished 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and four RBI out of the leadoff spot while JC Reed, Ryan Harvey (two RBI) and Thomas Hughes each posted multi-hit games with doubles. Cole Webb picked up the win, pitching all six innings while limiting Kennett to two runs on nine hits. He walked none and struck out three.

DOWNINGTOW­N 5, PHOENIXVIL­LE

1 » Andrew Ciliberto was the pitching star for the Diamond Dogs in their Chester County League victory over Phoenixvil­le on Tuesday night.

Ciliberto worked a complete game, limiting Phoenixvil­le to a third-inning run while striking out six. Dylan DiRocco (double) and Mike Mollenhaue­r (RBI) each went 2-for-3 for Downingtow­n (10-0) while Phoenixvil­le’s leading hitter was Kevin Cushing (2-for-3, double).

SPRING CITY 3, PHOENIXVIL­LE

1 » Grant Calvarese pitched into the seventh inning, limiting Phoenixvil­le to just one run on two hits in leading the Red Sox to a win on Monday night.

Calvarese struck out six and walked four before giving it over to Nick Price for the final two outs. Kasey Caras was 2-for-3 out of the leadoff spot while Andrew Huang and Gavin Boychuck each had a hit and a run scored. Kevin Cushing pitched 5-2/3 innings where he was tagged for three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks.

SPRING CITY 3, HOPEWELL 2

» Spring City’s American Legion baseball team took Saturday’s Ephrata Tournament game with Hopewell (N.J.) in dramatic fashion, posting a walk-off 3-2 victory.

The game was tied at two with the Red Sox batting in the bottom of the eighth when Andrew Huang doubled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run.

Spring City got things started in the first inning when Kasey Caras singled on a 2-1 count, scoring one run. The Sox evened things up at two in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ryan Harvey grounded out, scoring one run.

Sparacino was the winning pitcher for SC, allowing five hits and two runs over eight innings while striking out two.

Huang led the Sox offense with a 2-for-4 outing.

Muhlenberg 5, Spring City 2 >> The Red Sox were overtaken by Muhlenberg late in Friday’s Ephrata Tournament game.

Muhlenberg trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning before scoring twice to gain the lead on the way to a 5-2 victory at Ephrata War Memorial Stadium.

Brad Clemens, JC Reed, Gavin Boychuck, Kasey Caras, Tyler Horgan, Andrew Huang and Hughes each managed one hit for Spring City. Thomas Hughes took took the loss for the Sox, surrenderi­ng five runs on five hits over 4-1/3 innings while striking out five.

SPRING CITY 7, LIONVILLE 4

» The Red Sox opened play in the Ephrata Tournament with a victory over fellow Chester County League en-

try Lionville on Thursday.

Nick Price drove in two runs for Spring City, which put up a five-spot in the sixth inning to erase the Hillcats’ early 4-2 lead. Kasey Caras chipped in with a 2-for-3 bat in support of starting pitcher Cole Webb and Price in relief.

NORCHESTER 4, PHOENIXVIL­LE 2 » Josh Smith threw 6-1/3 innings of fourstrike­out ball to key the Big Dawgz’ Twin-County League victory over Phoenixvil­le on Wednesday.

Christian Grillo came in to relieve Smith and got the save. Julian Funaro reached base three times, including a hit, and scored a run. Aidan Rindfuss also had two hits.

Golf

PHILADELPH­IA PGA JUNIOR » Axel Kalbach came away from the first day of the Precision Pro Golf Open with a solid round at Turtle Creek Golf Course on Wednesday.

Kalbach, a resident of Royersford, finished in a four-way tie for second place in the Boys 13-18 Division. Kalbach’s even-par 72 was matched by Jonathan Lumley of St. Augustine, Fla., Morgan Lofland of Paoli and Ryan McCabe of Media. Thomas Butler of Telford was low man in the division with a three-underpar 69.

Other area players competing in the 13-18 Division were Joshua Brauer of Royersford and Conrad Benford of Parker Ford (tie 10th, 77), Luke Watson of Royersford (tie 25th, 84) and Jason Rieger of Collegevil­le (42nd, 90).

In the 12-and-Under Division, Kayley Roberts (Phoenixvil­le)

tied for second place with Mason Tucker of York, both shooting 45s. They trailed bracket leader Tyler Debusscher­e of Wallingfor­d, who carded a 42. JUNIOR PGA » Luke Watson was among the juniors emerging from Tuesday’s Philadelph­ia Junior PGA Championsh­ip qualificat­ion play at Downingtow­n Country Club on Tuesday.

Watson, a resident of Royersford, shot a sevenover-par 79 to tie for 15th place among the 28 qualifiers in the Boys 13-18 Media field. His score also ranked fourth in Boys 13-15 Media.

Missing the cut were Kyle Resuta of Phoenixvil­le (tie 35th, 87), Joshua Brauer of Royersford (tie 42nd, 89) and George Wicks IV of Phoenixvil­le (59th, 94). Brauer and Wicks IV were a respective 25th (tie) and 33rd in Boys 16-18 Media, and Resuta was tied for 13th in Boys 13-15 Media.
