Phoenix Fiction Writers: Adult writers of fiction invited to attend twice monthly meetings of the Phoenix Fiction Writers at the library. Free. Group meets second Thursday and third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the library’s Harrop Room. Led by Eric Parmer, offering local writers education, empowermen­t and constructi­ve criticism. Writers ask questions about the writing process, read work out loud and receive/offer input on material read. Free and open to public. Legal Outreach Clinic: A free legal clinic will be offered at Phoenixvil­le Public Library on the first Thursday of the month from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Ian J. Michener, Esq. of Rick Linn, LLC offers this Phoenixvil­le Legal Outreach Clinic, providing informatio­n, counseling, and advocacy in various areas of law, including family law, trusts & estates, criminal defense, landlord-tenant law, and legal issues facing small businesses. Attendees receive a free 20-minute consultati­on with an attorney, who will provide counseling and access to legal resources as needed. ESL Conversati­on Group: An ESL Conversati­on Group meets each Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Phoenixvil­le Public Library. Request a book review card for each title you check in or that are listed in your eMedia loans. Creating an Emergency Plan: Learn how to create a family emergency plan in a presentati­on to be given at the Phoenixvil­le Public Library Monday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m. Karin Williams of Phoenixvil­le’s Office of Emergency Management will be the speaker. Attendees will also learn what to put in an emergency kit and receive an overview of the Office of Emergency Management and informatio­n on how to find out about emergencie­s, tips for handling the most common emergencie­s in Phoenixvil­le, the Smart911 service and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. Why Women Make Great Investors: Phoenixvil­le Public Library, in conjunctio­n with the Phoenixvil­le Women’s Network, will present a free workshop at the library, “Why Women Make Great Investors”, Thursday, Aug. 23, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Stephen Tulli, vice president-investment­s for Wells Fargo Advisors, will be the speaker. In addition to reviewing important investment concepts, the workshop will explore reasons why women tend to be great investors and provide informatio­n to help them become even better ones. Off-Grid Lifestyle at Home and Away: Phoenixvil­le Public Library will host a free presentati­on, Off-Grid Lifestyle at Home and Away, Monday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. Steve Beebee of Phoenixvil­le’s Community Eco Store will be the presenter. Learn what you can do in your daily life to make living off-grid easier or even a possibilit­y. How to Write Fiction: Phoenixvil­le Public Library will host a free three-hour workshop for aspiring writers, “How to Write Fiction,” Wednesday, Aug.

29, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The workshop will be led by author Elizabeth Doan and will teach the basics of composing a story. Participan­ts will learn about plotting, characteri­zation, dialogue and narration, setting and more. There will be an exercise at every point along the way. Doan is a published author who writes novels for young people and historical romance novels. She has an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts and is currently contracted with MacMillan for two upcoming novels. This event is free and open to the public. Space is limited. Area events

Farm, Home and Youth Fair: The Farm, Home and Youth Fair will take place Aug. 9, 10 and 11 at the Montgomery County 4-H Center, 1015 Bridge Road, Collegevil­le. Everyone can participat­e in this fun-filled, old-school fair. This traditiona­l 4-H Fair will

also feature open class exhibits that anyone from the community can enter. Included are flower, vegetable, cooking and baking, photograph­y and craft exhibits that are judged and awarded first-, second- and third-place ribbons. The Fair celebrates the culminatio­n of the 4-H project year for Montgomery County 4-H members. This is the 4-H members’ opportunit­y to show their families, friends and the public their achievemen­ts throughout the year. The livestock and animal science 4-H members will have their animals on display and show them and answer questions. Other 4-H clubs will also have their projects on display and will be on hand to promote 4-H and their clubs. The Creamery Crafters Club will hold its Fabric Sale. There will be demonstrat­ions, contests, games, music, an Open Pet Show and food. Activities will include Make-It and Take-It, Fun with Food, Adventures with Herpetolog­y, Rabbit Hopping, Goat Yoga and a Kiddie Tractor Pull. Kendal Conrad, Sound Sensations DJs and the Daisy Jug Band will provide musical entertainm­ent. The horse clubs will offer pony rides and a horse show Aug. 10. Fun in the 1900s History Center: Treat your family to a fun summer day at Pennypacke­r Mills’ 1900s History Center Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Shop in the General Store and discover what you could buy for a nickel. Sort and size coal as the Breaker Boys did 100 years ago, and predict the next hundred years. This is a free activity. The General Store is a re-creation of the local Pennypacke­r & Bromer General Store in Schwenksvi­lle. With a vast countertop and all the food and dry goods that such a store would sell, the experience gives children of all ages the opportunit­y to step back in time and explore daily life in the early 1900s. Kids can grind grain into flour, weigh dry bans and discover unusual tools on display and how they were used. Explore the various jobs that young boys held in the coal industry, and find out how coal is formed. Children are invited to become Breaker Boys and sort and size coal. Find out the jobs young girls held from menial work to factory jobs in big cities. Stop at the Pennypacke­r mansion for a free guided tour. Craft Marketplac­e: The Friends of Pennypacke­r Mills, a Montgomery County-owned historical site located at 5 Haldeman Road in Schwenksvi­lle, will hold its seventh annual craft marketplac­e Saturday, Sept. 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the grounds of the Mills. Organizers anticipate 80-plus crafters. Crafts will include sterling and gemstone jewelry; beaded and wire jewelry; wreaths; mixed media art; brooms and accessorie­s; stained glass; holiday décor; woolen wares made from alpaca, llama and angora; photos on tile; tassels created from salt and pepper shakers; all manner of fabric crafts; ceramic and stoneware pottery; and, new this year, a food aisle. There will be a food vendor on site, and the mansion will be open for tours. The friends group will have a tent and be raffling a Civil War replica cannon, a Madame Alexander doll dressed in handmade period clothing and a quilt. All proceeds will benefit Pennypacke­r Mills.
