The Phoenix

At The Table With Stan Huskey

- Bette Banjack

Best known for his involvement in the newspaper world is Stan Huskey. Let’s go back to after his college years at the University of Tennessee in his home state. Stan moved to New Orleans where he opened a sandwich shop, The Gourmet Deli, for three years. The shop featured Southern comfort foods and local favorites.

In 1994 he came north and became a correspondent for the Daily Local News in West Chester. Two years later, he moved onto The Times Herald in Norristown as a crime reporter, moving up to city editor in 1999.

We met when Stan became the editor of The Phoenix in 2000. I had already been writing my weekly column for The Phoenix, which was a daily publication back then, for four years.

Our contact was over the phone and we actually did not meet in person for quite a long time. I remember telling Stan that he sounded much shorter on the phone than he was.

In 2002, he returned to The Times Herald as its editor for the next 11 years. After that, he became Regional Content Director for Digital First Media, owner of all of the above-mentioned newspapers (and many more.)

In 2016, Stan became Senior Editor for Digital First Media overseeing all of the company’s newspapers in the Philadelphia cluster, including The Times Herald, The Mercury, The Daily Local News, The Delaware County Daily Times, The Reporter, The Phoenix Reporter & Item, which had become a weekly publication, and The Trentonian in New Jeresy.

On the home front, Stan met Sue Woodie in 1997. When they married, they established a blended family. They each had three children. Today there are three grandchildren.

As the hard copy newspapers dwindled, Stan broke away from the traditional media to become owner of MONTCO. Today, an online news magazine with a focus on business. There are 23,000 subscribers— growing from 7,700 when Stan purchased the franchise in 2017. And MONTCO. Today is still growing.

Earlier this year along with his son, Eric, they launched Huskey Digital Media. This has a focus on website building and development along with newsletter publishing. For more information on MONTCO. Today or Huskey Digital Media, contact Stan at CuttingBoardCo@gmail.com. CuttingBoard Consulting is the parent company of both.

In 2017, Stan became a consultant and vice president of Government Affairs for the Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown. Currently, the zoo is celebrating its 95th anniversary and already looking forward to their 100th anniversary in 2024.

Stan still likes to cook — especially gumbo and foods of the South. Along with this favorite of the Huskey family.
