Phoenixville gets first win over Dobbins on field, helps out off it
Phoenixville won on the scoreboard Sept. 6, and the Phantoms also won big in their work for the community on Code Blue Night at Washington Field.
On the football field, Phoenixville posted a 60-6 victory over Dobbins Technical High School from Philadelphia to record its first victory of the season.
A solid team effort of offense, defense and special teams play combined for the gridiron victory over the Mustangs.
And a team-wide community effort, illustrated by a large crowd in the first game at home this season, worked together to collect supplies for Ann’s Heart shelter.
“We had two truckloads of stuff to go over there,” said Phoenixville coach Don Grinstead. “It’s a big deal for the community to come out and support this. We had a nice crowd. We are really involved with that Ann’s Heart and Code Blue.”
Aidan Foley ran for three touchdowns and Anthony Stevenson and quarterback Jack Pizor rushed for two TDs apiece as the Phantoms had a well-diversified attack on offense that accumulated 315 total yards. The running game produced 276 yards alone.
Pizor also completed a 16-yard scoring toss to tight end Matt Johnson, who had a big game at defensive end that included a tackle for loss.
The offensive line created the holes up front that allowed Stevenson to gain 118 yards, Foley 80 and Pizor 49.
Backup Mason Koch had a 5-yard scoring run in the fourth period, and freshman Ahmid Spivey also got into the act with some strong runs late in the game.
Safety Tre Davis intercepted a pass to set up Phoenixville’s third touchdown of the night that created a 19-0 lead at the outset. Pizor and Daniel Gray shared a sack on defense, and the Phantoms also recovered a fumble and blocked a punt to put themselves in good field position. Sophomore Chase McDonnell stopped a two-point conversion try.
The Phantoms held a 19-6 lead after the first stanza and were ahead 39-6 by halftime. The score was 53-6 after three quarters and the running clock was set into motion.
Davis, a sophomore, was active again on defense and special teams and also saw action at quarterback. Junior Kristopher Grinstead and senior Quinn Hoffman were also used at the quarterback position.
“We got mostly everybody into the game,” said Don Grinstead. “That was good. It is always good to be able to do that. A lot of the younger guys got in, and we’re a young team anyway. It was good for them to have some opportunities and snaps in the running game.”
The linemen did well on both sides of the football, including Gray, Johnson, sophomore Solomon Ortiz, sophomore Roman Ciaverelli, junior Liam McAdam and junior Nolan Martin.
The Dobbins touchdown came on a 69-yard pass from quarterback Aziz Smith to George Williams on the final play of the first quarter.
