PHOENIXVILLE >> What started out with one person’s idea about providing food in the winter to those in need has become an annual event.

This is the fourth year for the growing Fill the Shelves project. The food will be collected and divided in January 2020.

So why after the holidays? It is at that time food pantry shelves are bare. People are most generous during the holiday season — but the need to eat and feed families exists all year long.

It is asked that you put aside 1 to 4 cans, bottles or other non-perishable food products when you go grocery shopping. Diapers, baby food and animal items are accepted.

Each year two pantries

Each year two pantries share in the bounty received. This year, those pantries include The House: Phoenixville Women’s Outreach and Project Outreach in Royersford and Spring City.

To date the challenge has aided seven other food pantries. Bette Banjack’s Downtown Kitchen organizes and heads the challenge. They will be looking for volunteers to help in mid-January for an hour or two to help divide items collected.

There will be two dropoff places available this year.

Barto Pool & Spa at 437 Bridge Street and The DeMutis Group at 101 Bridge Street, both in Phoenixville, will be accepting donations. Dates to drop-off will be posted at a later date.
