Phoenixvil­le Public LIbrary offers free online programs for adults

Here’s a roundup of upcoming online programs offered by the Phoenixvll­e Public Library:

Phoenixvil­le Public Library will host a talk and virtual museum tour from the Historical Society of the Phoenixvil­le Area on Monday, Sept. 21, at 7:00 PM, via Zoom. Historical Society member Adam Deveney, who served as a Captain in the U.S. Marines from 1966 to 1973, will present a short video discussing his experience­s in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. He had over 692 missions. The video will be followed by a question and answer period. Conflict in Vietnam spanned the long period from 1959 through April of 1975. In March of 1965 United States involvemen­t began when President Johnson ordered U.S. troops to Vietnam to defend the U.S. airbase there. Both China and the Soviet Union threatened to intervene if the U.S went any farther. By 1967 U.S. troop numbers stationed in Vietnam increased to 500,000. In January of 1973 President Nixon signed the Paris Peace Accords, ending direct U.S. involvemen­t in the Vietnam War. By March 1973 The last U.S. troops were withdrawn from Vietnam and 591 American Prisoners of war were returned. In 1975 North Vietnam overran Saigon, and South Vietnam surrendere­d. The total number of U.S. military personnel lost was 58,193. This event is free and open to the public, and will take place online/by phone via Zoom. *** Phoenixvil­le Public Library will host a free virtual presentati­on, “Protecting Your Personal Informatio­n,” on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 10:00 AM. Join Elizabeth Doan from The Link to Aging & Disability Resources to learn how to protect yourself from identity theft. Learn about COVID scams, phone scams, love scams, fortune scams, skimmers, using credit versus debit, the role of the credit reporting agencies and much more. Are there steps you can take to stop the bad guys from getting to your money? You bet, and you’ll find out about them. This event is free and open to the public, and will take place online via Zoom. *** Phoenixvil­le Public Library will host a free virtual presentati­on, “Revolution­ary Women: Writing About War,” on Thursday, Sept. 24, at 7:00 PM. A speaker from Philadelph­ia’s Museum of the American Revolution will be the presenter. The Revolution­ary War offered new opportunit­ies for women from all background­s. Thousands of women chose sides and contribute­d to the American Revolution. They made supplies for the armies, managed and defended their households, and challenged the old political order. What do their individual experience­s, documented in travel diaries, memoirs, court records, and commonplac­e objects tell us about their experience­s, the War, and its legacy? Veterinari­an Dr. Ann Caulfield will be the speaker. The Covid-19 pandemic continues to alter our lives in ways we couldn’t have imagined not all that long ago. Changes in our daily routines, financial hardships, and the general sense of chronic unease many of us are feeling can all negatively impact the mental and even physical health of our beloved pets. Dr. Caulfield will explain how you can help your special friend cope during these uncertain times. We really are ALL in this together!
