Annual cookie sale goes online

Area Girl Scouts have kicked off their annual cookie sale safely by taking the tradition completely online.

“The pivot to innovative approaches is even more important this year,” Kim E. Fraites-Dow, CEO of Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania, said in a news release. “Cookie bosses as young as five years old are continuing to embrace their entrepreneurial spirits and stay connected to their communities amid the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The nine-county council, which serves Berks, opened its first fully virtual cookie season Thursday. The ordering method includes placing and receiving delivery through a national collaboration with Grubhub, according to a news release.

Supporters can place orders, pay online and select either shipping or curbside contactless pickup. They also can opt to purchase cookies that the council will then donate to Hometown Heroes, select local nonprofits and first responders.

Consumers who don’t know a Girl Scout can still purchase cookies online from a local troop.

This year, GSEP introduced the new Toast-Yay! cookie, a French toast–inspired, icing-dipped treat.

The flavor is available only in select areas of the country.

“We hope the delicious Girl Scout Cookie flavors, as well as girls’ skillful and persuasive sales methods, provide some comfort and levity to the local communities during this time,” Fraites-Dow said. “I can’t wait to see how our girl-led businesses become a success while bringing joy to the community.”

Orders of six packages or more will receive a 50% discount on shipping costs.
