Lower Providence Optimist Club sponsoring valentines for Meals On Wheels clients
LOWER PROVIDENCE » Valentine’s Day isn’t limited to romantic sentiments.
Members of the Lower Providence Optimist Club know that the occasion is ideal for spreading good will and affection to family, friends and especially homebound seniors who could use a little heartshaped cheerfulness during the pandemic.
The club put the call out on its Facebook page asking children ages five through 15 to participate “and bring smiles to our beloved senior citizens. Our goal is to deliver cards made from the youth in the community to the 150 participants of the Meals on Wheels Program. This means we need 150 Valentines by Sunday, Jan. 31. Each child can make or send as many cards as they’d like. Create a valentine and send it to Lorin@ lpoptimistclub.com. We will print and make sure the cards get delivered to the seniors in the program in time for Valentine’s Day.”
Three random winners from the submissions will be selected to receive $20 Amazon E-Cards at the end of February.
“People were sending the cards in by e-mail and I was printing them but then people asked if they could give the actual card, so they started dropping them off or I was arranging to pick them up,” noted Optimist Club President Lorin Richter. “We’ve gotten cards from Girl Scouts, Methacton High School, from grammar schools and from all over. Brownie leaders from Troop 7948 encouraged their troop to create beautiful cards. Everyone has until Jan. 31 to get their cards e-mailed or delivered and they will be delivered to the Meals On Wheels recipients the week of Valentine’s Day.”
Originally the plan was to give out the cards in Lower Providence only, but it quickly grew to include the Norristown to Limerick area, Richter said.
“The kids are doing a great job. Parents are looking for things kids can do at home and this will be very uplifting for the seniors. They don’t get much mail or much communication at all during COVID.”
