Three Chester County residents have made Forbes’ annual list of the world’s wealthiest people, and are among 17 billionaires who hail from Pennsylvania.

Mary Alice Dorrance Malone, 72, of East Fallowfield, is ranked 807th on the list of the world’s wealthiest people, worth an estimated $3.7 billion. She is heiress of Campbell Soup Co. and sits on Campbell’s board alongside her billionaire brother, Bennett Dorrance. Her grandfather, John T. Dorrance, invented the condensed-soup formula that transformed the company in 1897.

Richard Hayne, 73, of West Marlborough, is ranked 2,141th on the list of the world’s wealthiest people. He is president and CEO of Urban Outfitters, an American chain of clothing retailers with an estimated wealth of $1.4 billion. Hayne’s first store was located on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. Today, the company operates over 400 stores under four brands: Urban Out

fitters, Free People, Anthropologie and Terrain, a gardening brand. He formerly lived in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia.

Alfred West Jr., 78, of Willistown, made the list of the world’s wealthiest people, with an estimated net worth of $1.4 billion. West runs SEI, the financial services firm he founded in 1968. SEI first developed a computer program to train loan officers by simulating a lending environment. West took SEI public in 1981 and branched out into investment advisory and money management.

Forbes’ list of the world’s wealthiest exploded to an unprecedented

2,755, or 660 more than a year ago. Of those, a record 493 were new to the list—roughly one every 17 hours, including 210 from China and Hong Kong. Another 250 who had dropped from the list in the past came back. And 86 percent are richer — some far richer — than they were a year ago.

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, is still the world’s richest person, worth $177 billion, while Elon Musk surged into the number two spot with $151 billion, as Tesla and Amazon shares surged.

Altogether these billionaires are worth $13.1 trillion, according to Forbes, up from $8 trillion in 2020. The U.S. still has the most, with 724, followed by China (including Hong Kong and Macao) with 698. Forbes used stock prices and exchange rates from March 5 to calculate net worth.

Nearby residents of Delaware and Montgomery counties also made the list of billionaires.

Michael Rubin, online retail, has a net worth of $4.3 billion. Jeffrey Lurie, owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, of Wynnewood, has a net worth of $3 billion.

Alan Miller and family of Lower Merion, founder of Universal Health Services, has a net worth of $1.3 billion.

John Middleton of Bryn Mawr, the managing partner and principal owner of the Philadelphia Phillies who made his fortune in tobacco, has a net worth of $3.4 billion.

And David Paul of Audobon, who serves as the executive chairman of the board at Globus Medical, has a net worth of $1.4 billion.
