Phoenixville Public Library will host a free virtual presentation, “The Spirit World on Film,” Monday, Nov. 1, at 7:00 PM. Paul V. Walsh will be the presenter. Is there a ‘Spirit World’ that co-exists with the one inhabited by the living and is this our ultimate destination? From the very beginning, filmmakers have offered answers to these questions.
While ghost stories have been a staple of the horror genre, the spirit world has also been the subject of nearly every other category of movies, as demonstrated by comedies such as “Here Comes Mr. Jordan” (1941) and “Blithe Spirit” (1946), dramas such as “Between Two Worlds” (1944), romances such as “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir” (1947) and “Portrait of Jennie” (1948), even westerns such as “High Plains Drifter” (1973). Come explore during the Halloween season the many ways in which cinema has addressed this, the greatest of all mysteries. This event is free and open to the public and will be held online via Zoom. Registration is required at https://ccls.libcal.com/calendar/Phoenixville/spiritworld-on-film or by calling 610-933-3013 x132. Phoenixville Public Library hosts the next installment of “Talkin’ Baseball with Julian and Lou,” virtually, on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 7:00 PM. Join Phoenixville’s Julian McCracken and Lou Beccaria as they lead a lively discussion of the Philadelphia Phillies while giving you the opportunity to show off your favorite baseball memorabilia. First, Julian & Lou lead a discussion of the Phillies in 2022. Specifically,
what do they need to look like to better compete for the playoffs? For the past decade, Phillies fans have been left out in the cold during the warmth of playoff season. The everfaithful fans have been promised each year that a competitive product would be produced by upper management but to no avail! It’s time for faithful fans to take matters into their own hands. If you were the team owner or general manager, what would you do, realistically, to change things to finally get the Phillies into the ever-elusive playoffs in 2022? Then, you are invited to do a “show and tell” about your favorite piece of baseball memorabilia, on camera. Along the way, Julian and Lou will interject some baseball trivia questions and give away a copy of “Essentials of Professional Baseball: Balls, Bats & More!,” featuring a chapter written by Lou, to the person who answers the most questions correctly. Phoenixville’s Julian McCracken is a former General Manager of the Reading Phillies and member of the Reading Baseball Hall of Fame who later worked for ProCards in Pottstown and Fleer Trading Cards in Mt. Laurel, NJ. Phoenixville resident Lou Beccaria is the former President and CEO of the Phoenixville Community Health Foundation and has played high school, college, and semi-pro baseball in Philadelphia coached youth baseball and written about baseball.

The Phoenix Book Club, Phoenixville Public Library’s
book discussion group for adults of all ages, will meet virtually on Monday, Nov. 8, at 7:00 PM. The group will discuss “American Dirt,” the New York Times Bestselling novel by Jeanine Cummins. Lydia Quixano Perez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while cracks are beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, reasonably comfortable. Even though she knows they’ll never sell, Lydia stocks some of her all-time favorite books in her store. And then one day a man enters the shop to browse and comes up to the register with four books he would like to buy, two of them her favorites. Javier is erudite. He is charming. And, unbeknownst to Lydia, he is the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier is published, none of their lives will ever be the same. Forced to flee, Lydia and 8-year-old Luca soon find themselves miles and worlds away from their comfortable middle-class existence. A physical copy or audiobook version of this book may be reserved atwww.ccls.org. An eBook or eAudiobook copy may be reserved at https://chester. overdrive.com. The public is invited to attend.
