Democrats take full control of borough council

Council president won two seats, sole Republican ousted

ROYERSFORD » Incumbent Democrats appear to have kept control of borough council and ousted the board’s sole Republican, according to unofficial and incomplete results from Tuesday’s election.

And Borough Council President Anil Dham has won two different seats on the council, one for a fouryear term and one for a twoyear term, essentially blocking either of the two Republican candidates from taking a seat on the council.

As a result, when the new term begins, Dham will likely relinquish the seat with the two-year term, allowing the Democratic majority to appoint their own candidate to the seat.

In the race for the four seats with four-year terms, the top vote-getter was incumbent Amy Demchick, with 474 votes. She was followed by Dham with 442 votes, then-incumbent Matt Stehman with 421 and incumbent Alex Metricarti with 419 votes.

The one Republican in the race, Paul Chrisman, lagged behind with 330 votes, according to unofficial results.

Chrisman was also one of four candidates for the two seats with two-year terms but came in last with 288 votes in that election. Also ousted was incumbent Republican Thomas Weikel, who garnered 305 votes.

Instead, the two seats went to Dham and incumbent Democrat Ryan Conroy, who was appointed to the seat in March after the resignation of Joseph Moskal, one month earlier

According to unofficial results, Dham received 400 votes for one of the seats and Conroy 369 votes for the other.

Although Montgomery County announced late Wednesday afternoon that as many as 23,000 mail-in ballots have yet to be counted, the fact that mail-in ballots are more popular with Democratic voters makes it unlikely the results of this election will change once those votes are counted.
