Historical sites offer family-friendly programs in February

NORRISTOWN >> Montgomery County Parks, Trails, and Historic Sites invites the public to attend upcoming events hosted at its historic sites in February. These events are family-friendly and are low or no cost to attend, but reservatio­ns are recommende­d.

Pennypacke­r Mills — Valentine’s Workshop for Kids

Saturday, Feb. 4, 10 a.m. to Noon — $5 per child

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, kids are invited to Pennypacke­r Mills to create four fabulous Valentine’s crafts to share. Kids can make a “beary” special

card to share, a “Home is shaped fridge magnet, a Where the Heat Is” house- colorful tissue heart to hang, and a Victorian fan. This workshop takes place in the Classroom Building, just above the Pennypacke­r Mills mansion.

Children ages 5-10 years old, accompanie­d by one adult are invited to preregiste­r for this fun workshop. Call (610) 287-9349 to make your reservatio­n, no walk-ins will be accepted, and all materials are supplied.

Saturday, Feb. 4, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. — free admission

Winters were harsh in the 18th century, and the

Wentz family prepared with plenty of provisions. Without refrigerat­ion, colonial families found other ways to preserve food. Visit our Smokehouse to learn how meats were flavored, cured, and preserved at an 18th-century farm.

Then check out our Summer Kitchen to see how those provisions were used. Our cooks will be demonstrat­ing open-hearth cooking and baking in our beehive bake oven. Find out what types of food a family like the Wentzes ate this time of year as you enjoy the sights and smells of good home cooking!

Pottsgrove Manor — Historic Quilts with Ellen Endslow

Join us for a talk with Ellen Endslow, Director of Collection­s at Chester County History Center. Learn about the 175+ pieces in their collection, spanning the late 1700s to early 1900s — a small part of the southeaste­rn Pennsylvan­ia quilting heritage.

Endslow will also share discoverie­s from the Chester County Quilt Documentat­ion Project, which captured images and informatio­n on more than 1,000 quilts in the region.

If you’re an experience­d quilter or just curious about this unique art form, come visit Pottsgrove Manor to hear what stories are in every stitch.
