They saved my life

- BY JASON IRWIN

John 3:8 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

A few weeks ago I read an article from another inmate here in the jail. It made me think about my current situation. Both what I need to still do as well as what I need to do to prepare myself to leave this jail and be a success story instead of another negative statistic that adds to the recidivism rates here. I am a participant in JCAP here at the Marshall County Jail.

In the Fall of 2019 someone I viewed as a friend offered to get high with me. I had been sober since 2004 up to this point, but I made the wrong decision and was easily coaxed back into using. It might sound cliché, but it literally took this one time of using methamphetamines again and I was addicted again. Methamphetamines became the priority in my life and I truly regret that.

Being an addict is the hardest thing I have ever experienced in my life, but I have survived. Unfortunately many of us do not survive and or never find recovery. Prior to coming to jail I lost my job, starting falling behind on bills, and I caused many issues within my family. I almost lost my partner, the mother of my children, and love of my life for the past twenty years due to my behavior. At the time I thought I was making the right decisions because I was attempting to take care of my family by any means necessary; sharing the poison that had contaminated my own life with the community. This is something I will forever be regretful for. And I hope my family and the community can forgive for my actions. Harm was never the intention, but I see now the pain I have caused.

I was very angry with law enforcement upon my initial arrest, but I see now they started the process of saving my life. Since being in jail I have had the opportunity to participate in the JCAP program. This has been “my guiding light” to a new beginning. I feel like I am working toward getting my life back.

I participate in N.A. meetings, substance abuse programming, and I’m also working on my High School Equivalency. This program is making a difference in my life and I am thankful for it.

Thank you to those organizations willing to help me and others create better futures.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
