Laville tops rival John Glenn

- By S.E. SHEARER Correspondent

LAKEVILLE — Not many coaches have a fourth- and- 23 play on their play sheet. Not until now.

Friday was the 55th all-time meeting between rivals John Glenn and Laville at Lancer Field

It was a crucial fourthdown pass play by Laville that looked like one of those that Laville Head Football coach Will Hostrawser drew up in the first on the sideline.

Quarterback Lucas Pummer had a couple of guys in the route over the middle of the field and ended up finding Owen Smith for a 28-yard gain. That set up the host Lancers for a first-and-10 at the Glenn 15. On the very next play, Plummer found Leyton Czarnecki in the right corner of the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown. Czarnecki came on to add the all-important point after as Laville held off the Falcons, 17-14, at Lancer Field.

The Lancers got on the scoreboard first as Plummer found Smith open from 35 yards out and an early 7-0 LHS lead.

Following a Glenn punt, the Falcon defense forced the ball loose on a running play and Chase Howe

scooped the ball up and hustled 80 yards for a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

In the second quarter, Glenn quarterback Ayden Johnson found Howe open on a short 5-yard route to put the visitors on top 14-7.

That’s the way the half would end before Leyton Czarnecki connected on a 32-yard field goal to make it 14-10 at the half.

Both teams struggled with turnovers the entire game and neither were able to do much with the turnovers.

The led us to the final scoring drive of the game for the Lancers.

Laville started with the ball at the Lancer 46 before moving the ball down the field.

A crucial play in the 14-play Laville drive was a roughing penalty against Glenn. That penalty moved the ball to the Glenn 30. A holding penalty against Laville pushed the ball back to the Glenn 40.

Following a short run by Evan Bettcher and a pair of incomplete passes, Laville was whistled for a false start, setting up the big 28-yard completion from Plummer to Smith for the big first down

On the very next play, Plummer found Carnecki all alone in the end zone. Czarnecki added the final PAT and the final points of the game.

Class 2A # 12 Laville improved to 4-0 and will play host to Hoosier North Athletic Conference rival North Judson- San Pierre Friday, October 9.

John Glenn falls to 3-4 and will travel to South Bend Clay next week.
