Back to work for Glenn in an important ‘us’ week

WALKERTON — It was one of those games that just got away.

Glenn’s Falcons dropped a 17-14 decision to unbeaten rival Laville in the final minutes last Friday.

“It stinks for sure,” said Glenn head coach Austin Foust. “Our kids played incredibly hard. Our kids handled adversity all night long, giving them short fields on turnovers, not being able to move the ball very well offensively, and still gave ourselves a shot to win the game.”

“They (Laville) made plays late,” said Foust. “We had chances to put them away on the last drive. We had a pass interference call and failed to convert and get off the field on a fourth and long.”

“Our defense played incredibly well,” he said. “We just couldn’t move the ball well enough second half to put

together a drive and get our defense off the field. When you give an explosive offense like Laville that many chances the law of averages tips in their favor.”

With that game in the rearview mirror, the Falcons have their season in front of them.

“We have talked to the kids that we still have our destiny in our own hands,” said Foust. “We’re back to conference play, this is a road conference game and that’s an important one.”

Glenn sits tied atop the NIC South along with Jimtown, Bremen, and South Bend Riley. If the Falcons can win out, they will have no less than a tie for the top spot.

“That’s all you can ask for is to be the deciding factor rather than relying on other teams to do things for you,” said Foust. “We just have to worry about ourselves. This (first place in the conference) is something that we haven’t done here at Glenn since 1981.”

While Clay (1-6) hasn’t won since week one of the season, but they will be at home and clearly hungry for a win.

“They’ve struggled the past couple of years,” said Foust. “They have a new coach and they are doing things differently. They have some athletes, they play hard.”

Glenn will also be playing without starting quarterback Nathan Creed who went down with an injury two weeks ago.

“This is week two with our starting quarterback, Aiden Johnson,” said Foust. “I thought he did a nice job last week. He’s a sophomore and I told him it just gets easier from here. We’re getting him as many game-like reps as we can.”

“Defensively we have to be sure that we stay sound and read our keys,” said Foust. “Offensively we just have to put points on the board. It’s a big ‘us’ week. We’ve got to get better at our stuff, what we are doing, what we want to do.”
