Argos, Laville in sectional final

- By S.E. Shearer Correspondent

LAKEVILLE - Both Class 1A Laville Sectional high school girls soccer matches were expected to be competitive contests.

Neither match disappointed.

In the opener, Rochester was actually the aggressor, getting a couple of early shots on goal, but Argos goalkeeper Alyssa Poisel was ready for the early Zebra attack and kept Rochester out of the net as the Lady Dragons took a 4-0.

Madilyn Vanderweele, meanwhile, made use of a free kick in the 17th minute to put Argos on the board first.

After a couple of changes of field, Emma Dunlap found Lilly Hines near the goal on a nice little pass as Hines helped the Dragons up the ante to 2-0 in the 24th minute.

Rochester tried to rally, getting off four shots on goal in the first half, but none would find the net as Argos took a 2-0 halftime lead.

It was much of the same, as both teams had opportunities to score in the second half, it was just that Argos made the most of a pair of chances. Dunlap picked up a rebound goal in the 62nd minute after Rochester goalie Kaillie Woods made a nice save. The ball bounded away and Dunlap was in the right spot for the putback.

The final goal of the match came when Hines beat a pair of Rochester defenders and took aim at the Zebra net. Woods made what appeared to be a diving save, but the english on the ball spun off the hands

of the Zebra keeper and trickled into the net to make the final score, 4-0, Argos.

The victory moved the Dragons into Saturday’s Championship.

In the second semifinal, Bremen was quick to strike as Emma Graverson lofted a shot over the outstretched arms of Laville goalie Heaylyn Kwiatkowski to give the Lions a 1-0 lead in just the second minute of play.

After a bit of back and forth play, the Laville offense would attack the box. After a couple of attempts, it looked like Bremen might escape damage, but Kassi Watts found a loose ball in the scramble and knocked into the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1 in the eighth minute.

Watts wasn’t done, as the junior created a couple of shot opportunities for herself and scored at the 19th minute and 27th minute to give the Lancers a 3-1 halftime lead.

Bremen made several offensive moves, getting close several times with shots on goal off direct kicks, only to have Kwiatkowski make diving one-handed saves to keep the Lions out of the net.

The Lancers increased their lead to 4-1 when Kylie Gorka connected in the 46th minute. Bremen’s Haylie Rodriguez tried to keep Bremen close, scoring in the 59th minute, but Watts’ fourth goal of the night capped off a fine overall performance, a 5-2 Laville victory, and a championship match appearance on Saturday against Argos at 2 p.m. at Newton Park.
