Final drive dooms Triton bid

- By Rusty nixon Sports editor

BOURBON — Triton’s Trojans won everything but the final score as they couldn’t hold off Knox on their final drive losing a heartbreaker by a 22-18 final.

Knox stayed just close enough to take advantage of a final drive that started on their own two and ended in the endzone with less than a minute to play.

A great punt by Lucas Cabrera, teamed with a penalty had the Redskins pinned in the shadow of their own goal with 5:48 to play. Key plays by the offense for Knox at crucial times kept it alive.

Facing third and 15 at the ten Cohen Watson hit Kenan Collins for 25 yards and some breathing room at the 34.

Watson then hit Kole Mcintire one play later for 27 more and the Redskins found themselves in Triton territory at the 34 with plenty of time on the clock.

Another crucial play two plays later on third and 10 saw Watson hit Mcintire again for 14 more at the 20.

From their the Redskins ran the ball and the clock, punching in the score that gave them their only lead of the night 22-18 with :47.9 to play.

Triton would come out swinging with quarterback Cole Shively hitting Cabrera with a 35-yard pass to the Knox 45 with 8.5 left on the clock but time would run out on the Trojans.

It was a heartbreaking night for the Trojans who came out swinging from the start scoring on the fourth play of their first possession on a 30 yard run by Hunter Mcintyre.

The Trojans forced a three and out on Knox’s next possession and took advantage again but a 16-yard touchdown run by Shively was taken off the board with a motion penalty and a field goal attempt was blocked.

Triton went on a five minute twelve play drive of their own to end the first half ending with Shively hitting Cabrera with a 26 yard touchdown pass putting the Trojans up 12-0, but perhaps a portent of things to come Watson hit Mcintire with a 26 yard pass on the last play of the half putting the Redskins within a score at 12-8.

Cabrera made the most exciting play of the night as set up with a first and ten at the Triton 16 a simple pitch sweep for Knox turned into a “pitch six” as Cabrera got in the way to take the pitch himself and ran untouched 84 yards for the score.

The running attack was good to the Trojans as they went for 183 yards on the ground as part of 243 yards of offense. The difference was the Knox passing attack as they hit for 188 yards as part of 331 total yards on the night.

Triton is now 3-4 on the year and take on Winamac next Friday in their final home game of the year.
