SCILL announces students of the month

KNOX — The Starke County Initiative for Life Long Learning (SCILL) is please to announce the studentof-the-month recipients for September.

The studentof- the month for the Automation, Robotics, Equipment and Maintenanc­e Program is second year student Zach Husmann, of OregonDavi­s High School. The student- of- themonth is chosen by the Automation and Robotics instructor, Bill Gregor based on the student’s test scores, class participat­ion, attitude, attendance and initiative in the lab.

Zach is the son of Kurt and Wendy Husmann. He enjoys working with Mr. Gregor and helping out in the adult program classes held in the evenings. His future plan and dream is to own his own business. The idea of the business is to cater to small businesses featuring a wide variety of services. He chose the AREM Program because he loves working with electricit­y and small electronic­s. When asked “What have you enjoyed most about the SCILL experience?” His response was “I enjoy the workspace, my fellow students and our amazing teacher, Mr. Gregor.”

Instructor Mr. Gregor added “Zach is an amazing kid! He helps immensely in class with all the other students. He’s always ready and eager to take on a new challenge and he’s an exceptiona­l student.”

Two students were selected as student of the month recipients for the Automotive Technology Program. The student- of- themonth is chosen by the Automotive Technology instructor­s, Josh Holdread and Levi Schleg, based on the student’s test scores, class participat­ion, attitude, attendance and initiative in the shop.

One recipient is first year student Matthew Rock who attends Knox High School. Matthew is the son of Rollin and Michelle Rock. His future plan is to go right into the workforce upon graduation. He chose the Automotive Technology Program because he wanted to learn a skill he could do after graduating. He also wanted to be able to fix his own vehicles and help others out. When asked “What have you enjoyed most about the SCILL experience?” His response: “Learning a great work ethic.”

The other Auto Tech student- of- themonth for September is Billy Krumrie from Plymouth High School. Billy is the son of William and Cheryl Krumrie. His future plan is to attend WYO TECH, a diesel tech and auto mechanic training college in Laramie Wyoming. He chose the Automotive Technology Program because he grew up working on cars and wanted to further his education for a lifelong career. When asked, “What have you enjoyed most about the SCILL experience?” His response: “I genuinely have enjoyed the people.” His instructor, Mr. Holdread added, “Billy always does more than asked. He is also my first student to earn a 105% on a test this year. Good job Billy!”

The Emergency Medical Services Program student-ofthe month is Faith Travis who attends Knox High School. The student- of- themonth is chosen by the EMS instructor, Ms. Hawkins based on the student’s test scores, class participat­ion, attitude, attendance and initiative in the lab. Faith is the daughter of Kimberly Travis-strong and Jim

Strong. She is a member of 4-H and the U.S. Army Split-op Program. Her future plan is to obtain her EMT license and advance to paramedic before going to the Police Academy and continuing with her Army career. She chose the EMS Program because she wants to pursue employment in that field while waiting for the Police Academy. When asked “What have you enjoyed most about the SCILL experience?” Her response was “Being with everyone in the class and having an amazing instructor.”

Instructor, Ms. Hawkins added “Faith has been very eager to learn. She shows great leadership skills, is always willing to help and very profession­al. She will do amazing things.”

First year student Rachel Kaylor from Plymouth High School was selected as the student-of-themonth for the Fire & Rescue Program. The Student- of- theMonth is chosen by the Fire & Rescue Program instructor­s, Mr. Manns, Mr. Minker and Mr. Lawrence based on the student’s test scores, class participat­ion, attitude, attendance and initiative in a local fire station.

Rachael is the daughter of Chad and Teri Kaylor. Her extra-curricular activities include gymnastics and she is a member of the Plymouth High School Track Team.

Her future plan is to become a Firefighte­r. She chose the Fire & Rescue Program because she feels this is her calling and something she sees herself doing for the rest of her life. When asked “What have you enjoyed most about the SCILL experience?” Her response was “I have enjoyed the hands on experience that allows me to see what the Fire & Rescue career is like on a daily basis.”

Instructor, Mr. Manns added “Rachael is a very hard working firefighte­r that is doing an outstandin­g job with her IVY TECH online assignment­s as well as all the hands on work. She’s always engaged and not afraid to go first!”

Two students were also selected as student- of- the- month recipients for the Welding program.

The Student-of-the-Month is chosen by the Welding Technology instructor, Rachel Moore, based on the student’s test scores, class participat­ion, attitude, attendance and initiative in the shop.

One recipient is first year student Jakob Huitt from OregonDavi­s High School.

Jakob is the son of Seth and Tricia Huitt. He is a member of the

Varsity Soccer Team, 4-H, FFA, and a member of Koontz Lake Missionary Church. His future plan is undecided. He wants to finish SCILL Welding and possibly work for a local union or attend college for an engineerin­g degree. He chose the welding program because many members of his family have welders and have experience in fabricatio­n so it is something he was interested in since he was a child. When asked “What have you enjoyed most about the SCILL experience?” His response was “So far, I have enjoyed my entire time at SCILL. Every day, we are hands on so we are either practicing or improving something that we have learned or we are learning something new.”

The other recipient is second year student Caleb Rudd from Knox High School. Caleb is the son of Kelley Crittendon. He currently works part time at a local marina. His future plan is to apply for the 597 Pipefitter­s Union or the 150 Operators Union. He chose the welding program to get a good start on his welding career. When asked, what have you enjoyed most about the SCILL experience?

His response was “The people I have met and everything I have learned. Mrs. Moore is the best instructor there is!”

The SCILL program has been operationa­l since 1996. It was created by the Starke County Economic Developmen­t Foundation to assure that a qualified workforce was available to employers in Starke County.
