Interesting match up highlights Culver Senior Night

CULVER —- It was a tough week on the road at Pioneer for the Cavs and the killer end of the season has Laville coming to town to close the regular season.

“They (Pioneer) have a really special group, they are good,” said coach Mike Zehner of last week’s road loss. “They are good all around. They are a tough team to play let alone try to beat them. They beat 6A Chesterton and I think their only loss is to 4A New Haven and they’ve got a good team.”

There were positives for the Cavs after a very tough first quarter.

“Shane Schuman had 100 yards and I give a lot of credit to our guys up front,” said Zehner. “But defensively we have to do much better, get 11 hats to the ball, and play more disciplined and continue to improve.”

Laville (4-1) comes to Senior Night at Culver after taking a bruising loss against North Judson a week ago 9-7. The Lancer defense has been very stout all year.

“You can always expect a very disciplined defense when you play coach (Will) How strawser,” said Zehner. “They are fast. They are assignment sound. They are going to get there.”

“Their offensive line is young but they play like juniors and seniors watching them on film,” said Zehner. “They are big kids but they move well. They have a different style on offense with the spin series and a lot of adjustments and shifting. We have to know what we are doing defensively to get lined up correctly.”

With the pounding offense of the Cavs against the physical defense of the Lancers, it could be an interesting match up.

“Last year I don’t think anybody was counting on us to be there at the end but we were right there with a chance,” said Zehner. “It was a five-point game and we had our chances at the end. We just have to be sure that we stick to our game plan and stay sound.”

“We can’t give up big plays,” he said. “We did that too many times last week. We gave up easy scores, one or two play drives. We can’t do that. We can’t let the ball get thrown over our head.”

“If we can eliminate that and force them to drive the field we can give ourselves a shot to be in the game.”
