Culver Chamber of Commerce names ‘Life Time Achievement Award’ recipient
Barbara Winters came to Culver in 1964 when she was hired by the Culver Community Schools to be a Vocational Home Economics teacher. She loved that role and jumped in with enthusiasm.
A parent vocational advisory group helped develop curriculum and incorporated her into Culver. She and her family left the farm and moved into Culver in 1977.
Barbara and Ralph were a team. they loved their town and community and were active on many levels.
their son graduated from Culver Community, their daughter from Culver Academies.
they became members of the Culver Chamber of Commerce in the eighties and Ralph took a turn as President.
Barbara brought the top ten Dinner honoring students and their most influential teacher to the Chamber. She served as liaison for many years.
She was President of the Culver Community teachers Association and served on the Park Board.
Barbara gradually transitioned into teaching English, the subject she had taught when she first began teaching. She retired in 2003.
Ralph, through the Kiwanis Club, established the Barbara Winters Award for Excellence Scholarship to honor her forty- two ( 42) years of teaching.
By that time, she and Ralph had launched Culver Storage. Under that name they had become extremely active in Culver life, serving on committees both social and civic. If you needed a volunteer, one of them would probably be available.
Barbara served on the Culver Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA), and was the President of the Culver Lions Club. Her commitment to try Kappa (1980 to present) continues.
She is an active walker with the Culver Walkers. She served on the Board of the Marshall County Community Foundation where she and Ralph created the Barbara & Ralph Winters Community Fund.
Barbara lost Ralph in a traffic accident in August of this year. She is grateful for the outpouring of love and support from her beloved town and community.
