Three teams hopeful for first ‘W’

- By Ron Haramia Sports Writer

While the high school girls basketball season begins Week 6, one area boys team will finally play its first game this week, while two others are hopeful of getting their first win. Here are capsule previews for some of the top games tonight and Wednesday involving local squads.

Tuesday tangles

Plymouth @ Winamac (boys) One of these teams will get its first win of the season tonight when the Pilgrims (0-3) travel to Winamac. It is the season opener for the Warriors (0-0). Plymouth added Winamac to the schedule three years ago and has won the two contests at home (54-29 last year), but lost at Winamac two years ago (50-43). Plymouth has not started 0-4 since the 1963-64 season when it finished 0-21.

Triton @ Lakeland Christian (boys) Triton (0-1) travels to Warsaw to face fellow Class 1A school Lakeland Christian (1-0) tonight. The Trojans played the Cougars for the first time last year and won handily, 63-17. Lakeland Christian eked out a onepoint win over Culver in its season opener last Friday.

North Miami @ Culver (boys) Culver (1-2) wants to quickly forget about its one-point road loss last Friday with this home game against Class 1A North Miami (0-1). The Warriors gave up 82 points in their season opener and lone contest so far. North Miami defeated the Cavaliers last year, 55-41.

Mishawaka @ Bremen (girls)

This will be Bremen’s Senior Night.

The Lady Lions (2-2) have won two in a row after starting with two near misses. Mishawaka (2-3) is greatly improved from a year ago and has won two of its last three. Both teams have wins over Laville - Bremen by 23 and Mishawaka by 6.

Rochester @ Oregon-davis (girls) Oregon-davis (2-3) has alternated between wins and losses each game this year and is due for a win

after losing in overtime to Class 1A No. 9 Morgan Township Saturday night. Rochester (3-2) has won its last two games and its third win was an impressive OT victory over Class 2A No. 16 North Judson to start the season. O-D has won the last six meetings with the Lady Zebras, but the last time they played was 2012.

CGA @ Mishawaka Marian (girls) Culver Girls Academy (6-0) will have its biggest test yet when it travels to Class 3A No. 4 Mishawaka Marian (7-1) tonight. After going over the century mark in its win over South Bend Riley last Thursday (10113), the Lady Knights lost their first game of the season at Class 4A No. 14 Noblesville Saturday (63-52). The last time CGA was 6-0 was the 2011-12 season. The last time they started 7-0 was … ???

Culver @ Lacrosse (girls)

Culver (3-3) would like to break its string of alternating between a loss and a win when it travels to potential sectional foe Lacrosse (1-7) tonight. The Lady Cavaliers are coming off their best game of the season, a 59-28 win over Lakeland Christian last Friday.

Wednesday Watches

Plymouth @ Chesterton (girls) One of three rare Wednesday night games has Plymouth (3-4) traveling to Chesterton (4-1). The Lady Pilgrims had their two-game winning streak stopped at Goshen Saturday night. The Lady Trojans lost their only game thus far in their last outing, dropping a 44-33 decision Friday to unbeaten Michigan City, a team that defeated Plymouth by six in overtime. The last time Plymouth and Chesterton met, Dec. 2019, the game went to two overtimes (Chesterton won, 58-51).

Indianapolis Homeschool @ Culver Academy (boys)

Finally, the season opener for Culver Academy. This game had been scheduled for two other dates previously. Culver won this match-up last year, 69-54. It’s the first of three games this week for the Eagles before … a month off before its next contest Jan. 15.

Triton @ Tippecanoe Valley (girls) Triton (2-2) plays its third Class 3A school in five games when it travels to Mentone to face Tippecanoe Valley (4-2). This will be the fourth straight (of six) road game for the Lady Trojans, who played undefeated Knox tough in its last outing Saturday before succumbing, 41-32. TV defeated Triton by 23 last year.
