Weekend hoops

- By Ron Haramia Sports Writer

While giving is a high priority during the Christmas season, high school teams are doing their best NOT to share in order to continue their basketball season. Schools are doing their best to battle the coronavirus and despite many games being canceled/postponed, there are still a high number being played. Here are capsule previews for 16 of the boys and girls games involving area teams scheduled this weekend.

Thursday thrillers

SB Washington @ Glenn (girls)

Glenn ( 3- 3, 1- 1 NIC) took the court for the first time in a month Tuesday ( a 50- 42 loss to No. 9 Morgan Township) and faces another ranked team tonight in Class 3A No. 13 South Bend Washington (7-3, 4-2 NIC). This will be just the third Northern Indiana Conference contest for the Lady Falcons while the Lady Panthers have already played six NIC games and 10 overall.

Penn @ Bremen (girls) Bremen’s (4-2, 2-1 NIC) four-game winning streak is in serious jeopardy as Class 4A No. 3 Penn (10-2, 5-0 NIC) visits the Lions Den tonight.

SB Career Academy @ Argos (girls)

Argos (1-7, 0-1 HPC) will look for its second straight win when it hosts South Bend Career Academy (2-6, 0-1 HPC) for a Hoosier

Plains Conference game tonight. This is only the second meeting between the two schools. Argos won the last one ( Dec. 2014) by 62.

Frantic Friday

Northwood @ Plymouth (boys)

The first of two games this week for Plymouth ( 0- 4) has them starting Northern Lakes Conference play Friday against Northwood (4-1). The Pilgrims won at The Pit last year by five and would love to do the same at The Rock this year - and it doesn’t have to be by five.

Argos @ SB Academy (boys)

The first of two road games this weekend for Argos (2-2) has the Dragons traveling to South Bend to take on the Trailblazers (1-1, 1-0 HPC) for its first Hoosier Plains Conference tussle. The two head coaches (Argos’ Gordon Mosson, SBCA’S Pat King) have a combined 58 years of high

Career

school coaching experience, 1271 games and 738 wins between them (Mosson 456, King 282).

SB Washington @ Glenn (boys)

It will be 23 days since Glenn (1-0, 0-0 NIC) played its first and only game of the season when it takes the court Friday for a Northern Indiana Conference contest against South Bend Washington (1-3, 1-2 NIC). The Panthers snapped a three-game losing streak with an overtime win over SB Clay last Thursday.

Penn @ Bremen (boys)

Bremen (3-1, 0-1 NIC) is off to its best start since going 3-1 at the beginning of the 2005-06 season, but the Lions will get a major test with its second Northern Indiana Conference game. Penn (2-1, 1-0 NIC) has won its last two games, including a 16-point victory over New Prairie, following a twoweek quarantine.

Pioneer @ Laville (boys) Laville (0-1) finally got

to play its first game (a loss to Bremen Tuesday) and will play its first Hoosier North Athletic Conference game when it hosts winless Pioneer (0-4) Friday. The Lancers have won the last four meetings with the Panthers.

Oregon-davis @ South Central (girls)

This will be game two of three for Oregon-davis (3-5 before Wed night) this week and the only road game when it travels to Union Mills to face South Central (5-4). O-D won by a single point at home last year.

Saturday showdowns

Triton @ Plymouth

(boys)

After Tuesday’s win, Triton (3-1) has now won three straight since losing to Northwood (Plymouth’s opponent Friday) to begin the season. This contest is usually Game 1 or 2 for each school, but COVID

pushed it back until now. This one could be bombs away as two of the area’s top 3- point shooters (Triton’s Ashton Oviedo, Plymouth’s Nolan Bales) will be in action.

Laville @ Glenn (boys) The second game of a back- to- back weekend for both schools has the Falcons hosting the Lancers. Glenn won both meetings last year - regular season and in the Bi- County. This will be LV’S third game this week after waiting until Dec. 15 to play its first game due to COVID.

Argos @ Pioneer (boys) The Dragons travel to Royal Center to take on Pioneer (0-4 before Friday’s game with Laville). The Panthers upset Argos last year at the Dragon Den so maybe there will be some revenge for AHS.

Glenn @ Bremen (girls) This NIC encounter was originally scheduled for Nov. 24 but was pushed back as both schools dealt with COVID issues. It will be Glenn’s third game this week.

Pioneer @ Triton (girls) After last night’s non-conference game with Jimtown, Triton (3-4 before Wed game) has a home HNAC contest Saturday against Pioneer (4-3). Tipoff is 2 p.m.

Argos @ Elkhart Christian Academy (girls)

If Argos does not take SBCA lightly tonight, a third consecutive win is a reasonable goal when the Lady Dragons travel to Elkhart Saturday to face winless ECA (0-8, 0-1 HPC) for a Hoosier Plains Conference game.

Lighthouse CPA @ Oregon-davis (girls)

O-D’S busy week ends with a visit from Lighthouse CPA (4-2) Saturday. O-D was originally scheduled to play Lacrosse this night, but shocker, COVID came into play. No, Lighthouse’s nickname is not the Accountants. It is a college prep academy (CPA) charter school located in Gary, Indiana. O-D played them two years ago and won by four.

Plymouth @ Northwood (girls)

Plymouth is going through its second wave of COVID issues so this Northern Lakes Conference game has been postponed. No make-up date has been set. The Lady Pilgrims (3-5) are hoping to take the court for a rare Monday-nighter at Triton on Dec. 21.
