Catching up with college athletes

- By Ron Haramia Sports Writer

As students of all ages enjoy Christmas vacation, here is the first of two articles catching up with area athletes who have continued to compete at the college level. Competing in fall sports was made even more difficult with the coronavirus, yet many colleges did roll out athletic programs to some degree.

This list is by no means all- inclusive. Some athletes have not started their seasons and for others, we at the Pilot News are just not aware of where they are and what sport they are playing. If you know of former prep athletes from our coverage area that are not mentioned here or in Tuesday’s Part II, please email their names/ college/sport to rharamia@ thepilotnews.com.

Trey Galloway (Culver academy HS) is a freshman on the Indiana University men’s basketball team. He has played in all nine games so far with two starts, including this past Saturday at Illinois. Galloway is averaging 5 ppg and 2.2 rebounds in 23 minutes of action per contest. He is shooting 47 percent from the field, 31 percent on three-pointers (4-for-13), and 83 percent from the foul line (5-of-6). He is fourth on the team in assists. The Hoosiers are 5-4 overall, including wins over Stanford and Butler. They are 0-2 in the Big Ten. Their next game is at home Wednesday versus Penn State. The game will be televised by the Big Ten Network at 8:30 p.m.

Lanae Singleton (Plymouth HS) wrapped up her tennis career at Huntington College this fall as the Foresters went 5- 5. Singleton won her final singles and doubles matches in the team’s 4-3 win over IU Kokomo. At No. 1 doubles, she and her partner won 6-4, then at No. 1 singles, she won 6-3, 6-3.

“It’s been an honor and a privilege to coach Lanae the past four years,” said Huntington head coach Roger Ferguson. “Her work ethic and team-first mentality are things every coach loves to see in a player. Lanae is one of our

team captains and she has fulfilled that role with outstanding grace.”

Bo meadors (Plymouth HS) is a freshman at

Georgia Military College and runs cross country. One of the highlights from his season was taking 11th place overall at the 2020 Brickyard Classic with a

time of 33:18 for the 8K race. The men’s team placed third overall that day.

Kyla Heckaman (Plymouth HS) is a freshman at Bethel University and plays tennis. She played 13 matches this fall, with a record of 3-3 at 4 Singles, 3-2 at 5S and 1-1 at 6S. In doubles, she competed in 14 matches, with a record of 6-4 at 2 Doubles and 0-3 at 3D. In the last match of the fall season, Heckaman won her No. 4 singles match, 6-0, 6-1, and her No. 2 doubles match, 6-4, as the team defeated Adrian 6-1. The Lady Pilots’ overall record was 6-8 and they will resume matches in the spring.

“Kyla has been a wrecking ball for us,” said Bethel head coach Brad Foster.

“She came in nervous and rusty. She barely made the lineup at 6 singles. She lost her first college match ever in a close tiebreaker, pulled off before she finished her second match, then something just clicked for her and she went on a tear. She played 4 singles ( at the end of the fall) and she could have played higher. She showed a lot of drive. I’ve seen her fight so hard.”

audie Plothow (Plymouth HS) is a freshman at Bethel University and plays tennis. She played in 14 doubles matches this fall, with a record of 0-1 at 2 Doubles and 5-8 at 3D. In the last match of the fall season, Plothow won her No. 3 doubles match, 6-3, as the team defeated Adrian 6-1. The Lady Pilots’ overall record was 6-8 and they will resume matches in the spring.

“Audie has been a good doubles player for us,” said Bethel head coach Brad Foster. “We knew she would be helpful at doubles. She has good hands and reflexes at the net. She likes the net and likes to put the points away from there.”

Conner Ousley (Triton

HS) is a sophomore offensive lineman on the Trine University football team. The Thunder played two games this fall, winning both, and Ousley started in the victory over Manchester.

Nicole Sechrist (Triton HS) played 62 sets for the Taylor volleyball team that finished 8-11. She played in 18 of the matches, starting seven.

Mitch Rose (Plymouth HS) is a sophomore at Trine University playing tennis. In the team’s 8-1 win over Adrian College, he won his No. 3 singles match in straight sets. Trine faced Manchester University twice. In the first meeting, the team won, 9-0, and Rose was victorious at 3S in straight sets. In the second meeting, Rose played No. 2 doubles and he and his partner won, 8-5. Overall, the Thunder went 4-3 during its fall schedule.
