Triton tops Oregon-davis

BOURBON — Two of the best records around in Class 1A high school boys basketball - who happen to be sectional foes - faced off in a rare Monday nighter at the Trojan Trench.

Behind a prolific fast break, outstanding outside shooting, and five players scoring in double figures, it was Triton (6-1) coming out on top this time with the 83-55 victory over previously undefeated Oregon-davis.

“We’ve got some guys that can score,” said Triton head coach Jason Groves. “We like to play the fast tempo and get the ball up and down. We’ve got a lot of guys that can do a lot of different things. It’s nice to have that versatility.”

Bruce Johnson nailed five 3s for all of his 15 points to lead the home team in scoring, but he was followed closely by Ashton Oviedo and John Gardner with 14 each, while Cole Mckinney and Tyson Yates added 10 apiece.

“The kids understand, we have a lot of depth and if they’re not playing on the defensive end we’ll find someone else,” added Groves. “I’m proud of the guys though. They are buying into what we want to do.”

What they want to do is play defense that leads to offense and that’s just what happened. The Trojans scored more than 20 points in each of the first three quarters, starting with a 26-point explosion in the first eight minutes. Oviedo already had 10 points and both of his 3s before the second quarter started as Triton held a 14-point lead.

Johnson had three of his treys in the second period as Triton doubled up the Bobcats at the break, 48-24.

“He was lights out from 3 on JV last year,” Groves said of the junior reserve Johnson. “It takes him about Christmastime before he heats up, then he doesn’t stop. He’s a good player and works at it. It’s nice to see him have success.”

Mckinney had seven in the third quarter and Johnson hit his last two bombs as the lead went over the 30-point mark for the first time. The Bobcats played the Trojans even in

the final frame, but the damage was already done.

O-D’S Gavin Sabo had a team-high 15 points and Layne Fisher added 13.

Triton hosts Glenn on Friday, while O-D’S next outing is against Rochester on Saturday at the Bobcat Den.
