Argos Lions: Serving since 1937

- Staff report

The Argos Lions continue their community service since the club formed in 1937. In keeping with Lions International’s motto “We Serve” the Argos club currently supports many local organizations, such as Youth Soccer, Cub Scouts, and various Argos Public Library programs.

For many years the Lions have sponsored the “Visit with Santa” and recently, the Community Christmas Tree Lighting, and Community Appreciation Breakfasts.

They assist with Kids Sight Vision Screenings, Eye Glasses Collections and Student Vision needs, and the U. M. C. Children’s Re-sale.

To help the local school Argos Lions donate scholarships and dictionaries. They currently support the LEO club and have donated to Business Professionals of America, the Forestry Judging team, Old Gold Club, ‘Just Say No,’ Easter Egg Hunts, and many school library programs.

Each year the Lions sponsor the Argos High School After Prom as well as the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete.

They hold Foreign Exchange Students Night and maintain the school Crossing Guard Shelters.

At the county level, Argos Lions helped to create the 4H Fair as a founding organization and recently contributed to the new Fairgrounds building.

In addition to sponsoring 4H Junior Leaders and 10 year members, the Lions have spent over $15,000 in renovations, improvements and equipment for their own fairgrounds ‘Lions Building.’

Other county projects of Argos Lions have included helping the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, Junior Miss Pageant, Young Authors Conference, Purdue Glee Club, Neighborhood Food Pantry,

Historical Museum, Izaak Walton Fishing Derby, and even a circus.

Over 80 years old, the Argos Lions annually support state and projects such as Leader Dog, Speech

and Hearing, Vision First, Cancer Control, and Lions Clubs International Foundation which sends immediate aide for world disasters.

During the 2020 Covid crisis Argos Lions donated in appreciation to local health professionals and first responders.

They served lunch at the Argos Seniors Day in the Park. Plans are underway to provide local children a ‘virtual’ visit with Santa this year.

To finance the various projects and sponsorships Argos Lions sold citrus fruit for many years. They currently hold Port-a-pit sales and operate their food booth during the Marshall County 4H Fair.

The Argos Lions appreciate your support, allowing the club to remain active in its support to the local, school, county, state, and international communities.
