O-D tops Bremen

BREMEN — High school basketball teams want to be playing their best at the end of the season. Oregondavis’ boys squad just might be doing that.

Boosted by its defense and a 20-point fourth quarter, the Bobcats dampened Bremen’s Senior Night with a 57-39 road victory for the team’s third win in its last four games.

“We’re playing some good basketball finally,” said Oregon-davis head coach Larry Sennert, whose team had won just once in its previous 10 contests before this late-season run. “When we put the ball in the hoop, we’re a pretty good team. I thought we played good defense, but we’ve got to score. That’s been one of our weaknesses - consistently scoring.”

The scoring started to show against the Lions after Bremen took a 19-17 lead late in the second quarter. Back-to-back 3s from Ryan Pitts and Dylan Murphy just before halftime, followed by a Murphy jumper and rebound bucket from Connor Danford to start the third frame gave the Bobcats a 10-0 run and an eight-point advantage. The Lions were able to cut the gap down to two twice in the period, but a 7-0 spurt to end the quarter pushed the lead back to seven heading to the final eight minutes.

Two straight close range baskets from Cameron Taylor, then a steal and layup from Nolan Green put the lead into double digits, 45-32, just two minutes into the fourth quarter, but O-D was just getting warmed up and the lead continued to rise, reaching its highest point at the final horn.

“We turned up our defensive intensity,” Sennert said of the big second-half. “We’ve got eight or nine kids that can play at any time and that is a key for us. If a kid gets tired, we rotate someone else in there and you can’t tell the difference.”

Murphy was one of three Bobcats in double figures with 20 points.

“He’s really stepped up,” added Sennert of the senior. “This was probably his best all-around game.”

Danford was successful being aggressive going to the basket and finished with 15 points.

“He came to play tonight,” Sennert said of the sophomore. “He’s taken some games off, but he didn’t take this one off.”

Taylor came in next with an even 10 points.

“He’s had a lot of good games,” said Sennert of the junior guard. “He doesn’t always score, but he always does a lot of good things for us.”

Carson Miller led Bremen in scoring with 13 points. Already down starter Trevor Devine (injury), the Lions were also without the services of starting guard Tony Hardin.

Both teams finish the regular season tonight with home games as Bremen hosts Culver, while O-D welcomes Boone Grove to the Bobcat Den.
