Expressions Dance Studio: From pandemic to competition platinum and gold!
MARSHALL COUNTY — Expressions Dance Studio (EDS) instructors and dancers did not let a pandemic stop them from dancing their hearts out through the season. Whether the studio had to close it’s doors due to restrictions for a period of time, enforce masks and social distancing while training for group competitions — Instructors Nikki Pittman and Elizabeth Wickens poured their hearts into their dancers.
When the studio had to be closed; coaches offered virtual training through instructional videos. Constant communication was maintained through Team Reach, messaging and emails.
When one of the mother’s messaged Pittman with questions after hours, apologizing for the inconvenience, she responded, “You aren’t bothering me. They are family.”
Dancing is more than an activity. The dancers form bonds with one another through teamwork. They work individually on their own skills; and combine those skills with other dancers in the form of duos and group routines.
Each style requires diverse coordination. Dancers are mentored through the season as they grow physically, mentally and emotionally.
Dance is not only about physical health, it impacts mental health and self confidence.
Students are taught about self-awareness, self discipline and self care. They are taught about poise and presentation.
Erin Jones, who is a Zumba instructor, proud dance mom of Sophia “Sophie” Jones, and helps at the front desk at the studio said, “Dance, during the pandemic, has promoted a sense of normalcy and unity between teammates. The dancers have been able to safely continue to practice their art while enjoying each other’s company. as a parent, I am elated that my daughter has a way to
strengthen her physical skills and continue to progress as a dancer. as an instructor, my heart is brought joy to see the kindness extended toward one another in the form of working toward a personal goal and sharing in each other’s efforts. as a staff member, I love to watch the emotional connection that the dancers share. Dance has been a blessing to these kids, parents, and staff this past year and will continue to bring joy to many more.”
EDS offers a wide variety of classes ranging from
toddlers to adults. Dancers may audition to be part of competitive teams; the training for that requires dedication, not only in the studio but in all walks of life. Students and parents learn how to manage time, be accountable for attendance, communicating effectively and efficiently and being responsible for not only themselves, but the team.
