Lapaz Lions award Melvin Jones Fellowships

- By Dr. Don S. Balka

after over a year with no regular monthly dinner meetings, the Lapaz Lions met on thursday, Feb. 25 at Cornerstone Community Fellowship. In a special presentation by Lion President Steve Cox, Lions Steve Davis and Craig Hawley were awarded Melvin Jones Fellowships in recognition of their years of service to the community. For each

Fellowship, a $1,000 contribution is made to the Lions Clubs International Foundation to support the efforts of Lions clubs and partners in serving communities locally and globally, giving hope and impacting lives through humanitarian service projects and grants. To date, the Lapaz Lions have awarded 33 Melvin Jones Fellowships to members of the club.

Since July 2019, the

Lapaz Lions have contributed over $21,000 to local, state, and international projects. The annual March fish fry in 2020 became a drive-thru event. Two golf outings were held in Plymouth. Two drive-thru fish sandwich events were held to replace the annual corn sales at the cancelled Marshall County Blueberry Festival.

During the past year, the Club has made several donations to the County Line food bank and to Laville High School and Elementary School, donations to Boy Scout Troop 257, Lapaz Volunteer Fire Department for Halloween candy, North Township 4-H, Marshall County Community Foundation, Hospice of Marshall County, and Indiana Lions State projects. The Club continues to erect handicap ramps for local families.
