Better weather means more roadside workers - Be Aware!
Spring is right around the corner and with weather conditions improving, INDOT crews and local transportation personnel will be out working on various roadside projects. It is imperative for motorists to be mindful of their speed and surroundings as they’re traveling during the warmer months of the year.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety administration (FMCSA) reports that, on average, more than 700 fatalities occur in work zones annually. Local losses in recent years have shaken up our communities, further driving home the importance of using caution while behind the wheel.
The FMCSA has some work zone safety tips that can help keep drivers and roadside crews as safe as possible.
One way you can be better prepared is to research your route before heading out.
The Indiana Department of
Transportation has a website you can check ahead of time that will alert you to any lane or road closure that could have an impact on your commute.
That can be found by visiting http:// indot.carsprogram. org. INDOT reps note that while they do try to get the word out about projects ahead of time, they’re aware that they can’t reach 100 percent of people 100 percent of the time which is why it’s important to always be on the look out for road crews.
That leads us to another tip from FMCSA: pay attention and stay focused. Motorists should always keep their eyes on the road but it’s especially important when it comes to work zones. Avoid distractions such as conversing with other passengers, eating, drinking adjusting the radio or using a cellphone in any way. Be aware of all signage since it indicates reduced speeds, lane changes, and other important information.
If you see that you’re approaching a work zone, move into the open lane as early as you can and reduce your speed. Always give workers extra room and slow down even more as you approach crews. Keep your distance from other vehicles and be prepared to stop.
