John Michael Hopkins, 62, passed away March 30, 2021 at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Allen County.

Born in Steger, Ill., on Sept. 3, 1958 to Richard and Sheila Hopkins, John lived most of his life in the Culver area. He was a 1976 graduate of Culver High School.

The light of his life, daughter Amber Sue, blessed John with his first granddaughter Nayomii, followed by Kingsleigh, Summer and Axil, all of Culver.

He is also survived by siblings Jim (Mary) Hopkins, of St. Louis, Mo.; Daniel Hopkins of Reston, Va.; Rick Hopkins of Plymouth; David Hopkins of Plymouth; Therese (Paul) Drake of Rochester; Kathy (Alan) Hall of Plymouth; and Margaret (Rusty) Nixon of Plymouth.

He also has several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. They are: Jim and Annie Hopkins (Shane and Sophia) of St. Louis; Joseph and Ashley Hopkins (Conner, Elizabeth, Ava and Mia); Amber Starr Hopkins (Gabriella and Jalynn) of Culver; Cindy Hopkins of Virginia; Christine Good (Kimmi) of Lapaz; Tiffany and Jace Hahn (Colton) of Plymouth; Richard Hopkins (Joseph) of Plymouth; Brittney Hopkins (Mason and Cheyenne) of Terre Haute; Samantha and Josh Overmyer of Plymouth; Emilee Dean of South Bend; Isabella Hopkins of Tucson, Ariz.; Charity and Donnie Baugh (Ethan, Faith and Hope) of Rochester; Helene Drake and Luke Drake of Rochester; Matthew and Makaela Hopkins (Melea) of Plymouth; Travis and Rebecca Lee of Brownsburg, Ind.; Jacob (Aubriella) Kelly of Plymouth; Elijah Nixon and Nathanael Nixon of Muncie, and Benji Nixon and Zephan Nixon of Plymouth.

He was preceded in death by his brother Robert, parents, Dick and Sheila, nephews P.J. Drake and Cory Daniel Hopkins, as well as his maternal and paternal grandparents.

John loved the outdoors. He was an avid mushroom hunter and gardener, and worked most every job in his life outside by choice. Some of those jobs included working on a cow farm; as general laborer; construction; and on Lake Maxinkuckee where he installed and removed piers. John loved the water, especially fishing on it and enjoyed trips to Canada with his father and his father’s friends.

John adored his family and holiday get-togethers and was always up for a game of Euchre. He would usually win. He enjoyed cooking outside and was a jack of all trades. A stranger to no one, he liked a cold beer and a long story. Family believed you either liked John, or you didn’t. But either way, you’d never forget him.

John was very fit and could be seen riding his bike near his home on S.R. 17 in Culver, all the way to Plymouth or to Rochester to visit family.

The family is asking for privacy in an intimate burial for John at Culver Masonic Cemetery on Wednesday, March 31. Officiating last rites in a Catholic prayer, which was very important to John as he grew up in the Catholic faith, will be Fr. William Meininger of St. Mary’s of the Lake Catholic Church.

Odom Funeral Home in Culver is in charge of arrangements. You can view the burial and prayer via Odom’s Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/odomfuneral-home-inc-187007081331078.
