Every ‘litter’ bit helps
Marshall Co. Community Clean up Challenge
Marshall County is celebrating Earth Day in a unique way this year. Marshall County Recycle Depot Education Coordinator and Intern, River Watson, collaborated on a community wide event to lead environment enriching clean up and environmental restoration efforts locally.
Watson, a graduate of argos High School, is a senior in the Sustainability program at Indiana University South Bend. The environment is important to Watson and inspired him to dedicate his life to a career protecting and sustaining it. “It started out just liking the environment and being outside. But then I started to learn about the bad things that happen to it. I’m just trying to make a little bit of difference where I can.”
Director of the Recycle Depot Marianne Peters spoke highly of her school mate, the two will be graduating from their prospective specialties this Spring, Peters will be completing her Masters Degree in Public affairs. “Having River on board has been amazing. He’s been great at coming up with cool and new ideas for
Earth Day.”
Watson has directed a tree distribution project. For a $1 donation guests can bring home a tree to plant in their own yard. Peters said, “Partnering with Trees for the Future wasn’t even on my radar. But, that’s been really exciting.”
The Recycle Depot is holding an event Saturday, april 17 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
That event will be followed by a community clean up effort starting at the depot starting at 1 p.m. Visitors will have an opportunity to meet the staff, take a tour of the depot and learn about recycling. The tour will include a presentation on the worm composting bins and guests will have an opportunity to witness the rain barrel in action.
Guests are invited to visit the pollinator areas and rain garden. Contact Peters at mpeters@myrecycledepot.org with questions. More detailed information can also be found on Facebook @ Recycle Depot.
