Bremen wins 2nd regional

- By Rusty Nixon

CULVER - It didn’t take long for Bremen to clinch their second straight regional tennis title, defeating Peru, 4-1.

The Lions’ #1 doubles team of Shay Kyser and Mason Porter made quick work of their opponents and the #2 doubles team of Camden Hickman and Max Varner were second in the clubhouse with a straight-set win.

Not much later #3 singles Mariano de Leon made it official with team win number three dispatching his opponent 6-1, 6-3.

“We couldn’t believe we won it last year and this year we knew we had a shot,” said Bremen head coach Kevin Hickman. “This group of seniors like each other, they play a lot, they do everything that we ask of them and they respond. They are a special

group of kids. We’d never won a regional before and now to have two in a row is unthinkable really.”

With the team trophy already in the bag, #1 singles Carson Miller and #2 singles Dawson Hickman knew - like everybody in attendance - that the Lions were advancing. Both had tough first sets but rebounded to scratch out the second set of their matches to force a third.

Hickman finally succumbed to Peru’s Ben Beckham 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

Meanwhile Miller - in a match that lasted close to two and a half hours finally scratched his way to a 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over Peru’s Ian Potts.

“I think our top five are right there and somebody has to play #1 and Carson takes that burden on,” said Hickman. “He beat a really great player.”

Bremen will now face Munster in semi-state Saturday at noon.
