After week off, Falcons antsy

WALKERTON - The

Glenn High School football program had a big night planned last Friday with the field being renamed in honor of longtime coach

John Hostrawser on Senior

Night. However, a medical issue late in the week forced the cancellation of the game and all of the other festivities.

“We get to 2:30 pm on Thursday preparing for a game, it’s going to be Senior Night and an opportunity to play at home, it’s a conference game. It was tough having the game called off,” said Glenn head coach Austin Foust. “Other teams are dealing with it too. The shining light is that we are back. The season is not over. We’re still playing. I’ve learned that you have to have good problem-solving skills as a high school football coach. What you think is going to happen going into the day never seems to happen that way. There’s always a couple of curveballs. We got a feeling what life was like without football. For some teams next week (sectionals), that’s going to be a reality. Hopefully, we have that taste of what it’s like and we don’t like it.”

Now that the surprise bye week has passed, the Falcons (3-4, 1-2 NIC N-S) are ready to hit the field again as they travel to South Bend Washington (3-3, 1-2 NIC N-S). This week’s game ends the regular season and is also the last Northern Indiana Conference contest as well. The winner will end up as the third place team in the North-south Division.

“Washington is coming off a big win over Bowman (56-8) and it’s going to be their Senior Night. They’ll be flying high and ready to

go,” assessed Foust. “They are a physical team. Their guys running the ball are big-play threats on every play. Defensively, they are aggressive, just trying to create havoc. They’ll try to put pressure on us. If we can control the line of scrimmage, we feel pretty good. We cannot let their talented running backs get going. They are going to be a challenge for us. We’ve had some good battles with them the last couple of years.”

The Panthers won, 35-13, last year. The teams have played each of the past six years with Glenn winning only one of those (28-21 in 2019). The popular John Harrell website predicts a shootout in the Falcons favor, 31-21. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on the artificial turf at TCU School Field.
