Glenn riding momentum
WALKERTON - Glenn’s football team did what every program wants to do heading into the postseason - gain momentum by winning the last regular season game.
“Coming off a loss to Laville (two weeks ago) and having our (original) Senior Night taken away from us (due to Covid), we weren’t sure what was going to happen (last week), but credit to our guys who were ready to go,” said Glenn head coach Austin Foust, whose Falcon squad dismantled South Bend Washington, 41-0, to finish third in the Northern Indiana Conference North-south Division and snapped a twogame losing streak in the process. “Kory Vanhuss ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and that set the tone, then we had a punt return for a touchdown by Chase Howe right before halftime. To get two scores from special teams is huge. It’s a backbreaker for the other team. Then our defense pitched a shutout. They have given up only nine touchdowns in eight games. That’s pretty outstanding. We lean on them quite a bit. They are going to have to continue to play well for us.”
The Falcons (4-4), part of Class 3A Sectional 26, will host the opener with Lakeland (3-6) visiting Falcon Field. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The Lakers are from Lagrange and part of the Northeast Corner Conference. Lakeland finished in a three-way tie for second in the NECC Big Division with Garrett and West Noble. The Lakers have lost their last two games and three of their last four.
“(Second-year) Coach (Ryan) O’shea has that program turned around,” added Foust. “They beat Angola this year, which is like the first time in 20 years. They lost by one to a good Churubusco team (Class 1A No. 9). This is a good football team and everyone is 0-0. Lakeland is happy they aren’t playing (#12) Marian, (#11) Jimtown or (#7) Tippy Valley. They will be excited to play us. We’ve got to be ready to go. We’ve got to come out with energy from the get-go. Offensively, they are a spread team and like to throw the ball. We are looking forward to that because we’ve been playing teams that just pound the ball. They are a big-play offense. Our secondary has to be ready. They are going to throw some deep balls. Offensively, we feel like we are playing better than we were at the beginning of the year.”
Glenn will celebrate its Senior Night this week with festivities starting at 7 p.m. Kick-off is 7:30.
