Continuing the tradition at OD

HAMLET — When the opportunit­y to coach girls basketball at her alma mater, for Aubrey (Minix) Lady, “It was a no brainer.”

Lady (Minix), a 2009 graduate of Oregondavi­s High School, led the Bobcats to three sectional championsh­ips, three TCU Bi-county championsh­ips, the 2007 state championsh­ip, and capped it off by being named to the Oregon-davis Hall of Fame. And those are just to name a few accomplish­ments by the first-year head coach at OD.

“I’ve grown up around the Lady Cat program since I was 2 years old,” said Lady, who played at OD from 2005-06 to 2008-09. “My father, Terry Minix, started his coaching career and I have been a part of it ever since. It was a no-brainer.”

Lady says that she plans to continue the tradition that her dad establishe­d.

“This year we will continue with the Ladycat tradition, working hard on our defense and running the floor,” said Lady. “Undersized and undermanne­d but we should be able to compete come sectional time.”

According to Lady, defense and running the floor will be team strengths and keys to success during 2021-22 will be rebounding and hustle plays.

Mercedes Rhodes is counted as a key player lost from a year ago. Rhodes, was a versatile 5-foot-8 player for Oregon-davis, who takes 1,933 points with her through graduation, including 480 points as OD’S leading scorer off a 10-10 squad in 2020-21.

Lady, who also serves as the Oregondavi­s Athletic Director, is also the state career 3-point record holder, scored 1,606 career points and holds the USI women’s basketball 3-point record for made baskets in a half at six. She attended Murray State for two years with one being a redshirt before transferri­ng to USI after surgery following her sophomore season. She then played three years at USI.

Following her collegiate basketball playing days, she was a Bethel (College) University assistant and OD assistant.

Senior Maddie Hudspeth leads a veteran group of six returning letter winners. Hudspeth averaged 16.2 points per game, 10.2 rebounds per game, and an assist per game last season. Junior Mackenna Chessor is also among the returning group. Chessor is a guard/forward and averaged 8.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg, and 1 apg.

Lady is married to Ben and they have three kids - Korbynn Elyse, Brooks Gunnar, and Oakely Addisynn - with one on the way.

“I’m a Bobcat alum and have also taught at the elementary for a few years before taking time off to be with our kids,” concluded Lady.

OD will open the season on Nov. 5 at Elkhart High School.
