Very experienced cast returns for Culver

- By Rusty nixon Sports editor

CULVER — In just his second year Culver coach Kyle Evans has a veteran crew of returnees that are a year deeper in the new system.

“Everything is easy right now,” said Evans. “It’s year two and we have a lot of guys with a lot of experience and that makes for an easy first two weeks.” Evans will have five returnees that spent a lot of time in the starting lineup a year ago.

“Austin Zehner just a big kid who started some last year and one of our first guys off the bench most nights,” said Evans. “He’s strong with good feet and he’s made himself into a perimeter threat to shoot.”

“Marquez Anderson started every game for us last year,” said Evans. “He’sa strong kid good defender and perimeter threat too. Jalen King started nearly every game for us a year ago.”

The underclassman had a couple of players gain experience under fire.

“Emeliano Ortiz was our defensive player of the year last year,” said Evans. “Ethan Keller took over as the point guard, he’s not going to score 15-20 points every night but he does everything else.”

“We have a deep team with eight or nine guys and each one gives us something different than the others.”

That depth is a key when you play the type of defense the Cavs want to play.

“We have to play the way that we do,” said Evans. “We aren’t going to create a lot of points in the half court with talent alone, we have to do it with our defense.”

“Our guys have been coming up saying ‘it’s not as hard as it was last year’ and that’s what happens when you understand angles and trapping and all the things that we do. You don’t have to work as hard.”

“We haven’t had to have a lot of breaking down stuff because our guys have been through it, they understand it really well,” he said. “When we do go through teaching moments we are getting through it in much less time.”

“We expect to win ball games,” said Evans. “We look at our schedule and we are trying to get across to them that if we do a certain three or four things right we are going to be in every game we play.”

“I fully believe that. If we are doing those things we know will give us a chance to win, that would be a good season. But we still want to win games.”
