Big Marshall County boys game leads off week

- By Ron Haramia Sports Writer

Week 1 is in the books for the high school boys basketball season. Teams will now settle into a schedule of usually two or three games per week from here on out. The girls season is already in Week 5 and teams are finding out their strengths and weaknesses, along with those of the competition ahead. Here are capsule previews for some of the top games tonight and tomorrow.

Tues. tangles Plymouth @ Triton (boys)

The headliner tonight has these two Marshall County foes tangling at the Trojan Trench. Plymouth leads this series 29-7 over the last 35 years, but Triton (1-0) won this match-up for the first time in seven years with a 20-point victory at The Rock when these two last met a year ago. The Trojans got off to a great start for 2021 with an impressive 48-point road win. This will be Triton’s home opener while it is Plymouth’s (0-1) second straight road game.

Glenn @ SB Clay (boys)

Glenn (1-0, 0-0 NIC) opens Northern Indiana Conference play at South Bend Clay (1-0, 0-0 NIC). The Falcons have won the last four meetings, but two were by just seven and three points. Both teams are coming off impressive opening outings. Clay, winners of just 15 games the past four years combined, has loaded up its non-conference schedule with five Class 1A schools, including its opener against the Smith Academy Fighting 54th. Not only is that one of the strangest nicknames I’ve ever heard (sounds like an army regiment), but ironically, that is the number of losses its current coach has since taking over the program (5-59).

Tippecanoe Valley @ Argos (boys)

Argos’ (0-1) first home game of the season has Tippecanoe Valley (1-0) headed to the Dragons’ Den. TV put up 68 points in its opener. Although the Vikings have dominated this series (28-8 the last 35 years), Argos won last year’s meeting by six.

Culver @ West Central (boys)

Culver’s (0-1) first road trip has them traveling to Francesville to meet the Trojans (0-0). The Cavaliers have won the last three meetings. Westville’s first two games were postponed due to covid concerns so this will be its season opener.

Bremen @ SB St. Joseph (girls)

Bremen (4-3, 2-2 NIC) has its third of four straight NIC games when it travels to South Bend tonight to face the Lady Indians (5-2, 2-2). The Lady Lions have alternated between a win and loss the last four games and is due for a win. After starting 5-0, St. Joe has lost its last two games, including giving up 101 points to Class 3A No. 1 SB Washington in its last outing.

CGA @ Lacrosse (girls)

CGA (5-2) better get over its one-point loss to Laville quickly as it travels to unbeaten Lacrosse (6-0) next. These two met for the first time last year with CGA winning easily.

Mishawaka @ Laville (girls)

Laville (4-2) is enjoying its first threegame winning streak since December 2017 and already has the same number of wins as the last two seasons combined. The Lady Lancers will take a step up in competition level when it hosts Class 4A Mishawaka (1-3) from the Northern Lakes Conference. The Lady Cavemen won by six last year.

Wed. watches Laville @ Triton (girls)

Laville’s second game in as many nights has it traveling to the Trojan Trench for its Hoosier Athletic Conference opener against Triton (5-3). The Lady Trojans are riding a three-game winning streak and have dominated this series, 21-2. The last time the Lady Lancers came out on top was a 37-36 overtime win in November of 2016.

Rochester @ Culver (girls)

The first of two home games this week for Culver (2-7) has Rochester (5-3) as the opponent Wednesday. The Lady Zebras are on a three-game winning streak and have dominated this series (15-2). These two did not meet last season.

Marquette Catholic @ O-D (girls)

The first of three games in four nights for Oregon-davis (3-3) has them hosting Marquette Catholic (0-6) Wednesday. Don’t let the Lady Blazers’ record fool you. This fine program is just two years removed from back-to-back state championships and their opponents so far this year have a combined record of 27-10. They have already faced two Class 4A teams. The only 1A team they have played ended in a 14-point loss to No. 9 Morgan Township.
