Reflections on John 10:1-18

“All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. Yes,

I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” John 10:8-10

No matter who the person is, everyone is looking for a life that is fuller and more satisfying than what they have now. Some people look toward education to make them smarter than they are now. Others work harder with longer hours to get ahead. Still, others seek out different people or opportunities, seeking a more meaningful life. However, people tend to seek what can be accomplished in this life for a more satisfying life; when what people are seeking is a satisfaction that will last forever.

The satisfaction that most people are seeking is more on a spiritual level, rather than physical. It is known by many people that having money, power, education; all the opportunities that come your way, will not satisfy that longing deep in your soul. There is always one more thing to accomplish, one more goal to complete, and when that is all finished a hollowness is experienced that is not satisfied. Now, where does one turn to, and how much more needs to be accomplished?

Jesus is sharing with everyone who is seeking a fully satisfying life, that he is the way. He talks about listening to the voice of authority and who can fulfill this need. A shepherd has an intimate relationship with the sheep. When they are sick, the shepherd tends to them until they are healed. When the sheep are lost, the shepherd restores them back to safety. When the flock is attacked by an intruder, the shepherd defends with their life. People who are hired to help tend the flock, but do not have this relationship; will run away at the first sight of danger.

Jesus is the Good Shepherd of God’s flock. If anyone wants a fully satisfying life, they will experience this under his care. When you are lonely, Jesus walks with you. When you are hurt, then healing words of forgiveness will be shared with you. If you are worried and unsure about anything, Jesus assures you that God cares and will surround you with his presence.

How can this all be true? It comes in the closing lines of the scripture today: “My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” What is this life? Through his death and resurrection from the grave, Jesus brings you into the presence of God. He promises to defend you from all evils that may befall you and restore you when you do. A rich and satisfying life is the abundant life Jesus speaks about regularly. You may not be rich by the standards of the world but knowing and living in God’s presence and when your life in this world has ended, Jesus brings you into eternal life with God.

Dear Lord, I have listened too much to the voices in this world; I now desire to hear yours only. The abundant life is to know you as Messiah and God as my loving Father. Walk with me always, giving me peace and joy that only you can give. Amen.
