Time to tee it up for HS teams

- By Ron Haramia SPORTS WRITER

Between rain showers, you may have noticed an uptick in play at area golf courses. That also means the high school boys golf season is about to get started.

The first official match was scheduled for Wednesday - weather permitting, always weather permitting for golf - with Culver playing Laville at Swan Lake. Here is a quick glance at the two area teams slated to hit the links first.

CULVER will sport an older lineup with a large corps of returnees. Those back in the fold include seniors Dalton Powell and Trent Fritter, plus juniors Rylan Voter and Steven Pugh. Newcomers to watch are seniors Tucker Fisher and Auston Zehner, along with freshman David Hite.

“I’m excited about four returning letterwinners and the additions of Fisher and Zehner to the roster,” said head coach Josh Pugh. “We have eight guys that are juniors or seniors this year, so they know what to expect while competing. Now it becomes my job to get them ready to compete.”

The Cavaliers’ next match is set for April 14 when they host Triton.

Two letterwinners return for third-year LAVILLE golf coach Keith Walker juniors Karter Kaser and Kyle Walker. Newcomers to watch for are freshmen Jalen Heilman, Caden Rush, and Chase Schmidt.

”Our boys are learning fast,” said Walker, who is assisted by Luke Hillegonds, in an interview on the school’s website. “It’s just a matter of implementing what they’re being taught. Each athlete brings their own character to the team. Each one of them can potentially be really good golfers. I’ve seen in practice that each can have excellent golf shots. Now we must work on consistency. If they continue to practice and become more consistent we will have one heck of a golf team.”

Laville’s next match is a three-way competition on April 13 against Bremen and Triton.

“All in all, I love this game and I love teaching it,” added Walker. “Everyone has seen that ‘aha’ moment whether it’s teaching someone something or just observing. The ‘aha’ moment is a wonderful thing and it is one of the main reasons why I coach. When I see that moment I feel like I have done my job, and it makes me as happy as the person I am instructing.”
