Lady Pilgrims grab home opener

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth started its 2022 season with a quality win over Districtra­nked Valparaiso 3-2 Monday night. The Pilgrims won their home opener,#1 while avenging a close 3-2 loss to Valparaiso from early in the 2021 season.

Both doubles teams, #1 Juniors Taylor Delp and Ellie Jones and #2 Sophomores Annie Plothow-cassidy Riddle were victorious in straight sets. Senior Aubrey Vervynckt provided the match-clinching point at one singles, battling back from a first set 8-6 tiebreaker loss to win her match in three sets. Aubrey cruised 6-1, 6-1 in the final two sets against a quality opponent.

Junior Bella Kain battled over three hours for two tough sets, winning a second-set tiebreaker 7-0 to force a third set super-tiebreaker, which she would ultimately lose 10-6. At #3 singles Junior Morgan Langfeldt fell in her first Varsity singles match.

JV singles winner for the Pilgrims were Tallie Hundt. JV doubles winners for the Pilgrims tonight were Marley Christy-alivia Kizer, Maddy Thangam-emma Jackson, Jo Houin-magaly Rodriguez, Dorothy Karris-katie Fishback, Kiley Pitts-niki Melendez, Cloe Byrd-natalie Sheely, Claire Lewandowsk­i-izzy Ray, and Lena Houin-maddy Thangam.

Plymouth travels to John Glenn Tuesdayfor a reschedule­d match starting at 5:15 p.m.
