Better days ahead for area HS golfers

- By Ron Haramia Sports Writer

It has been ‘slow play’ for area high school golfers so far this spring season. The weather has not cooperated much, but there is still plenty of rounds remaining for local prep players. Here is a quick recap of some season highlights and key matches coming up.

Most of the area teams will compete in the Marshall County Tournament May 10 at Swan Lake. The weather has to be nice by then, right?

Plymouth will not be one of the teams playing Swan Lake that day, but the Pilgrims have 13 more events still to go, including the Wawasee Invitational today, the Warsaw Shootout May 3, the Plymouth Matchplay tourney May 7, the NLC Tournament (May 21), at Culver Academy (May 26), and the Warsaw Invitational (May 28). Sectionals are June 3.

Culver Academy has already posted impressive team scores of 156 (Apr. 19) and 161 (Apr. 25) this spring. Rory Sullivan and Jaxson Wiemik each carded 38s during the three-way match against Concord and Laville on April 19. The Eagles host Mishawaka Marian and Lalumiere Tuesday, May 3. Other key matches remaining include the CMA Invitational at Notre Dame’s Warren Golf Course (May 14), the West Lafayette Invitational at Purdue University’s Kampen Course (May 21), and a triangular match versus Penn and Plymouth (May 26).

Triton’s Cole Mckinney is off to a promising start. The senior has gone sub40 for nine holes a few times already and shot a 75 for 18 holes at the Whitko Invite April 23. Five of Triton’s six remaining matches are large invitationals/tournaments.
