according to Director Christine “Chris” Garner, four families were able to purchase a home in 2022. “Which is a big thing!” Through the help of MCNC, several families have been able to improve their housing situation.
She reported that several individuals quit smoking over the course of the year. Quitting smoking is a physically and financially healthy lifestyle choice, reducing the chances of tobacco and nicotine related health risks and saving money for individuals and families.
Several individuals are taking advantage of the Pro Bono Counseling Project (PBCP) being offered through Mental Health awareness of Michiana. Individuals, couples and families who have no insurance, are underinsured, or who cannot afford mental health counseling are eligible for short term counseling
services to help with relationship problems, parenting and other life stress, transitions, school or work challenges, adjustment issues, grief or loss, and mild to moderate anxiety and depression. More information on those services can be obtained at mhamichiana.org or email Mha.michiana@gmail.com.
Racheal Filley said there is a distinction between an acute need and a chronic situation. The goal of the MCNC is to offer a hand up not a hand out; to assist rather than enable.
Aleshcha Dewitt said many individuals and families are seeing success. According to Dewitt, those who embrace and maintain healthy boundaries are those who experience the most success.
Garner said, “Christmas was hard this year. It was really hard on us.” Garner’s team saw a sharp increase in applications; and many of those were first time applicants. “I felt like the ones who this was their first time - they were very appreciative.”
Garner said that only have of Tier One families those who apply for assistance the first time - will apply for Tier Two assistance. There is a substantial drop in Tier Two applicants to Tier Three. This trend demonstrates that the program is successful.
