Plymouth wins Invitational

- By Rudy Marquez CORRESPONDENT

Plymouth gymnastics took first place in its own Plymouth Invitational Saturday, Jan. 14, breaking the four-year win streak of the Dekalb Barons.

Hosting gymnasts from 12 other schools, Plymouth was able to field two squads for the meet with the Plymouth Red team posting the top score of 103.55. Red team members were Kasi Harner, Tessa Hutchinson, Arielle Ferman, Piper Frank and Jersey Hunter. Dekalb placed second with a team score of 98.4. Western was third with a score of 93.15. Lakeland was fourth with an 88.1. Plymouth’s white team had a total score 88.05 for fifth place. Plymouth white team members were Joy Everett, Rowynn Halldavis, Lila Hanyzewski, Mia Krathwohl and Daniela Moreno.

Individually, Tessa Hutchinson placed first on the beam, second on the floor, third on the vault and ninth on the bars to finish first in the all-around competition with a score of 35.65.

Jersey Hunter placed second on the beam, fourth on the vault, sixth on the floor, seventh on the bars, and fourth in the all-around with a 35.1.

Kasi Harner placed fifth on the vault, sixth on the beam, and 10th in the allaround with a 32.8.

Coach Mandy Bender praised her gymnasts who overcame a couple of rough moments as they work to add new elements to their routines.

“I thought we did great today on both the varsity and the JV team. Varsity we counted two falls towards our team score which is a little unusual for us, Kasi on beam, Tessa on bars, which is a whole point deducted plus some of the extra values that they lose. Just some things that we’re working on that we’re getting in the mix. Our JV girls got to complete allaround for the first time for Row, and Lila, and Joy. Daniela was almost there, she did everything but floor. And they beat several teams as a JV squad. I think they did really, really well,” said Coach Bender.

Plymouth’s next meet will be Saturday, Jan. 21, at Fort Wayne Concordia for the Carter Classic. That will quickly be followed by a trip to West Noble on Monday, Jan. 23.
