BREMEN — The championship pairing for Sectional 18 in Class 3A high school girls basketball is now set after Glenn defeated Knox and Tippecanoe Valley downed the host school Bremen Friday night. Tonight’s sectional final will tip off at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Falcons, 48-31, during the regular season.

GLENN 39, KNOX 30

Glenn defeated Knox, 52-40, in the second game of the regular season back on Nov. 5, but the Lady Redskins got the Lady Falcons’ attention early with a 10-0 first-quarter run and led by eight heading to the second quarter.

Glenn had just two field goals in that first quarter and only one in the second, but held Knox scoreless in the second period and were still within three at halftime.

“We didn’t hit anything in the first half, but when we came in at halftime I wasn’t that mad because we were only down three,” admitted Glenn head coach Ted Hayden. “I told the girls we needed to only score about 25-30 points and we would be fine.”

After struggling from the field in the first half, Glenn found a solution the long ball. Out of the Lady Falcons’ nine field goals in the second half, seven were from behind the arc. Addison Reese hit her second and third 3s of the game and scored eight in the third frame as Glenn took its first lead of the game at 17-16.

In the fourth quarter, reserve Danielle Devine topped that, nailing three triples around Kennedy Hayden’s second one of the game and with a little over five minutes remaining the Lady Falcons were comfortably ahead, 32-23.

“I was telling people that we had a couple of sleepers who played JV most of the season only because of numbers, but I knew they had the ability to do something in sectionals and Danni is one of them,” added Hayden. “She did what I expected her to do.”

What she did was score all 13 of her points in that final quarter to lead Glenn in scoring. Reese finished with 11 and Hayden 10. Eight of Glenn’s 12 made field goals were 3-pointers.

TIPPECANOE VALLEY 56, BREMEN 33

Tippecanoe Valley came in with 19 wins, one of those a 68-32 victory over Bremen on Nov. 3, then played every bit like the sectional favorite.

Bremen’s Mikayla Shively scored on a drive the first time down the floor to get the raucous student section even more riled up, but after that it was all TV. The Lady Vikings scored the next 24 points - from eight different players and that gap was just too much to make up.

Game-long foul trouble (23) for the Lady Lions, plus pesky half-court and three-quarter court presses by TV led to a load of relatively easy points for the fast, physical, big (three 6-foot or taller) and deep Lady Vikings.

To Bremen’s credit, it never gave up despite the long odds after falling behind by so much so early. In fact, the Lady Lions outscored TV, 24-19, over the second and third quarters, getting as close as 13 on two occasions. The first was after two free throws from Emma Kincaid to make it 33-20, and the second after back-to-back 3s by Kila Foster and Shively put it the score at 39-26.

Shively led Bremen in scoring with 12 points (three 3s). Kaydence Mallott, one of four senior starters for TV, had a gamehigh 20 points, 14 coming from the foul line. The Lady Vikings shot 21 more free throws than the Lady Lions and had 16 more makes.

The loss ends the prep careers of seniors Katie Moyer and Paige Kertai.
