Imaginary and Kung Fu Panda 4

- BY GAVIN GREER

I think this is the first time in a few weeks where my friends and I actually saw the movie we had planned to see as we saw Imaginary last week. I wish we had seen something else, I was very disappointed by the movie.

Imaginary is about a children’s book author who has been dealing with nightmares that involve the book that she is writing. To help her feel better her family decides to move into her childhood home. While here the author’s stepdaughter develops a friendship with Chauncey, a stuffed bear that has a hidden evil inside of it. In the end the author finds out that this was originally her bear and she dealt with the same evil as a child herself.

This was probably the worst movie I have seen since starting this column. The movie’s IMDB page makes it sound so much more interesting and the trailer had a different feel to it than most horror movies as it relied on sound instead of visuals. After seeing the movie I understand why they did not use the visuals.

I did not like the story, the actors or the horror in the movie. I think the only thing I liked was the humor in the movie that was in maybe two to three scenes.

My problem with the story is that it kept acting like the stuffed bear was going to hurt the family at the start of the movie. Every time that it seemed like something interesting was about to happen things would just stop and they would move on. Another part of the movie that I disliked was when a psychologist was called in to talk to the girl who had the doll. This scene started off very interesting as the bear began to threaten the psychologist. This led her to tell the main character about how she has seen things like this from people that she knew. She talked about how kids would have imaginary friends who ended up luring them away from their family never to be seen again.

After hearing this the main character finds out that she is the only one that can see the bear. This is then reversed a few minutes later as everyone can see the bear again. This was never really explained and I felt like it took away the most interesting idea presented.

At the end of the movie the main character and the older stepdaughter go into a mirror world with their neighbor, who is an expert about all that is happening, to look for the missing girl. The neighbor ends up betraying them and then gets eaten by the bear. This made no sense to me as she was helping the bear. She could have made it even more difficult for the heroes to find the girl but they just threw that away.

There was also a twist at the end that others in the theater enjoyed but I noticed a hint earlier in the movie about it so I did not enjoy the twist. I felt like the movie showed the hint for a bit too long and it could have made it a bit better if it skipped showing that part.

I did not like the acting in this movie. One of the main characters is a small child so she gets a break on her acting, but I could not stand her voice. The main character and the older actor where okay and added the two best acting performances in the movie. The best character in the movie was the families neighbor and her son. The son acts like he is super cool and does hard drugs, his mom then comes to pick him up after the main character catches him in her house and explains that the “drug” that he is taking is just her allergy medicine. I would even say this was probably my favorite part of the movie.

The horror of the movie was lacking as the visuals of the monsters looked really bad. In the mirror world the bear looked like a giant stuffed animal with a weird shaped head. There was one monster that looked like it would be creepy at the start of the movie but that really went downhill once we got a better look at it later on.

I apologize for giving a lot of spoilers about the movie, I just wanted to save your time incase you had planned on seeing it!

This week my friends and I are going to see Kung Fu Panda 4. I have written this sentence the past two weeks but have had to edit my column after my friends would change the plans. As of publishing it looks like we really are seeing it. My friend Zack has been very excited to see this movie so I am glad that we can finally see it for him.

Kung Fu Panda 4 sees Master Shifu hand over the role of spiritual leader to Po. With this new role Po has to find and train the next Dragon Warrior. As he works to do this, a new villain emerges. This villain is a shapeshifter who is rescuing all of Po’s greatest enemies from the shadow realm in order to steal their powers.

When I was little I enjoyed the original Kung Fu panda and I liked the tv show that ran for a few seasons on Cartoon Network. I think I have seen the second movie of the series but I cannot remember much about it. I do not believe that I have seen the third movie so I may need my friend to explain it to us before we see the fourth.

This is not really a movie that I wanted to see. I thought maybe I would take my sister to go see it but she never seemed too interested in it. I did think that parts of the trailer looked funny, but the reviews I have seen for the movie make it seem like the series should have stopped at three.

There are five new movies coming to theaters near us this weekend. These are Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Late Night With the Devil, Immaculate, Luca and Sleeping Dogs.

Ghostbuster: Frozen Empire is the newest installment of the new series. In this film an ancient artifact is discovered which unleashes an evil force. Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age. I am not sure if this will ever be a movie that I see. I have not seen any of the original movies but this one looks funny as it has Paul Rudd in it.

Late Night with the Devil is about when a live television broadcast in 1977 goes horribly wrong unleashing evil into the nations living room. This movie has so far received very good reviews and looks like something I may eventually see.

Immaculate is about Cecilia, a woman of devout faith who is warmly welcomed to the picture-perfect Italian countryside where she is offered a new role at an illustrious convent. While here it becomes clear to her that her new home harbors dark and horrifying secrets. My friends and I plan to eventually go see it, Sydney Sweeney is in it, so you can guess why we are interested in watching it.

Luca is a Disney movie that originally released on Disney+ in 2021. This is the first time that it is releasing in theaters around the world. It is about a friendship between a human and a sea monster who become friends. My little sister liked this movie, but I thought it was one of the worst Disney movies I have seen.

Sleeping Dogs is about an ex-homicide detective that has memory loss who is forced to solve a murder. While on the case he begins to uncover chilling secrets from his forgotten past. Russell Crowe and Karen Gillian star in this movie.

Kung Fu Panda 4 continues to do well at the box office as it remains in the top spot of the box office with a $30M weekend gross. Over two weeks it has grossed $115M.

Dune: Part Two came in second with $29M over the weekend. Over three weeks it has grossed $214M.

Third place in the box office belongs to Arthur the King which had an opening weekend gross of $7.6M. So far it has grossed $9.8M.

Imaginary takes fourth after having a $5.6M weekend gross. Over two weeks it has grossed $20M.

The final spot of the top five goes to Cabrini which had a weekend gross of $2.8M. Over two weeks it has grossed $14M.
