Javan May becomes first male athlete from Triton to qualify for the Hoosier State Relays
BOURBON — Javan May, a senior at Triton Jr. Sr. High School has been taking part in High School State Qualifier meets for the indoor track season. He has qualified for the indoor track state Hoosier State Relays which takes place on Saturday, March 23 in Indianapolis.
Reaching this competition makes May the first male athlete from Triton to ever qualify for the HSR.
“It’s gratifying to qualify because I have put a lot of time and work in the weight room this off-season. They started this indoor meet in 2005 and Triton has had many great track and field athletes through the years, so it’s definitely an honor to be the first one to make it,” May said.
May spoke about what his focus was through out the indoor season.
“My goal has just been to improve my time every competition. So far I have been able to improve my time with each race,” May said.
May will be competing in the 60 meter dash. He is seeded 13th out of 24 competitors with a seed time of 7.19.
The 60 meter dash is the only event that May has competed in during the indoor track season. He explained that at the HSR there will be three heats for this event. Each heat will have eight competitors. The top eight times of all of the competitors will make the finals.
“My goal is to make the finals. That would guarantee me a place on the podium and I would receive a medal. So I really need to run well in my heat race,” May said.
The indoor track season helps prepare track and field athletes for the outdoor season which takes place in the spring. May talked about how he has used this season to prepare him for his senior outdoor track and field campaign.
“The indoor season has let me focus on form and working a lot on my starts. We have our first outdoor meet in a couple weeks so I should be in better shape to start the season than I was last year,” May said.
