BPL now offers a Silent Reading Club
BREMEN — The Bremen Public Library recently held the first meeting of their Silent Reading Club. This club, which was started at Bremen by Jennifer Laudeman, is a reading club that is for people who find regular book clubs intimidating. This gives them a club where they can be around others where they are not expected to talk.
Laudeman explained that she follows the North Manchester Library on social media and saw that they had recently started a silent reading club. She said these pop up at libraries and outside of libraries.
This club is designed for teens to adults. Ryan Calhoun, the BPL’S young adult librarian, is looking at eventually making a silent reading club for teens.
“There’s no pressure. There is no pressure to talk to anybody if you don’t want to. If you still want to be in a social setting and maybe you need to warm up before you want to start talking
to people, then you can do that. You can read your own book, whatever you want to read,” Laudeman said when talking about how this club can benefit those who join.
Lanyards are available at the adult desk during the club for people who would be interested in talking about the books that they are reading. Those who wear a lanyard can talk to other club members to learn about what they are reading.
“I hope that it makes people feel comfortable. We want to get more people in to the library to see that we offer more than just the program they’re there for, maybe they would learn about other things we have to offer,” Laudeman said when talking about her hopes for the club.
The club meets on the first Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The next meeting is May 2.
