Historic tall ship replica docks in New Bedford
NEW BEDFORD - When Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan circumnavigated the globe 500 years ago, he made history.
Now, visitors can board a replica of the Nao Trinidad, a 16th-century tall ship that sailed as part of Magellan’s fleet.
“While at port, the ship is a floating museum and people are welcome to tour the ship, interact with the crew and visit the exhibition on board,” Ulises Custodio of the Spanish-based nonprofit Nao Victoria Foundation, said in a news release.
The ship arrived in New Bedford on Sept. 4 and will be open for tours at Pope’s Island Marina from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Sept. 12.
“The arrival of the Nao Trinidad is a great opportunity to educate visitors and residents about Magellan’s circumnavigation of the globe,” Ashley Payne, director of Destination New Bedford, said in news release.
“The explorer’s Portuguese heritage resonates with the City of New Bedford’s Portuguese and maritime history.”
Tickets for the boat tour are $15 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 to 12. Children under 5 board for free. Family passes are available for $35 and include admission for two adults and three children.
Tickets will be available in person at Pope’s Island Marina, but purchasing tickets in advance online is strongly recommended.
