Prayer group to begin meeting in Barclay Square
PUNXSUTAWNEY — An independent group of Christians made up of various churches in the Punxsutawney area will hold a prayer event this Saturday in Barclay Square — one members intend to be the first of many.
The group is called the CHRIST Task Force.
Mary Ann Amundson, group leader, said CHRIST stands for Christian Hearts Reaching In Service Together.
“I did this over 20 years ago, and I started with the children of the Punxsutawney Christian School, and it fell to the wayside,” Amundson said. “Now is the time to bring it back again due to the issues all over the country, the world, our kids, everything.”
She said they are not affiliated with any church.
“You can choose to come the park this Saturday, July 16, in Barclay Square,” Amundson said.
After that, they intend to hold the event every other Saturday.
The time this Saturday is 1 to 3 p.m. After that, it will switch to 10 a.m. to noon. The group plans to continue meeting in the park through October.
Amundson said this is a two-fold ministry.
The first part of it is to come to the park and pray for the community, state, country and the world, and the second is to pray with people who go there in need of prayer.
Amundson extended the invitation to everyone to come to the park if they are in need of someone to pray with.
“Our shirts designate who will do that,” Amundson said.
Pairs of people will be on hand to pray with anyone who requests it.
“We’re trying to show Jesus’s love for people out here in the streets,” Amundson said. “I always wanted to have the street ministry outside the walls of the church.”
Amundson said that the Holy Spirit came back to her heart and mind to do it.
“I told my friends about it; everybody easily came on board to help,” she said.
Anyone who would like to join the group and get one of its identifying t-shirts should get in touch with her, she said.
Shirts are $13.50 if you’re going to pray with people because the logos are printed on front and back. The shirts are $9 if you want to come to the park and pray over larger issues.
