Punxsy students get free haircuts for Hygiene Week
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Area High School celebrated Hygiene Week by offering free haircuts to the students, thanks to the generous donations of two area barbers.
Shannon Rosetti, school support therapist/ social worker, said that she and her partner, Jenni Oswalt, have a display in the main lobby area that explains hygiene using plastic ducks, which are filled with facts about hygiene.
“Not to necessarily scare the kids, but to show them how important it is to wash your hands, skin and hair,” Rosetti said. “Today is going to be a selfcare day and wellness assembly; it’s one of those ‘you look good, you feel good’ things.”
She said Chuck Sallows from Baka’s Barber Shop in DuBois and Brock James from the Broken Comb Barber Shop in Punxsutawney were there to provide haircuts to all of the students in need free of cost.
James said that he enjoys coming up to the school.
“It’s fun to help the future generations out as far as getting ready for becoming an adult,” James said.
Sallows said they wanted to establish something so they can give back and offer this to the students in a trade that they both believe in.
“We established last year that we can offer kids to try a new style, a look they’ve never had before,” Sallows said.
“Tomorrow (today) we’re going to have the same assembly; we’re going to have the Day Spa from DuBois and Salon Cortina and Baka’s Barber Shop back to cut anyone with longer hair that needs shaped up,” Rosetti said.
She added that Punxsutawney Area Hospital donated a bunch of hygiene products, and Walmart donated gift cards and additional bags for the products.
She said that every bag comes with deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, hand sanitizer, bar of soap, hygiene pamphlet and contact lens care.
